Location: Oxford
Job Description:

Oxford Ionics, now part of IonQ, is pioneering the next generation of quantum computing. Using our world‑leading trapped‑ion technology, we’re building the most powerful, accurate and reliable quantum systems to tackle problems that today’s supercomputers cannot solve. Joining Oxford Ionics means becoming part of a global IonQ team that is transforming the future of quantum technology – faster, at scale, and with real world impact.

What to Expect

We are seeking an experienced Senior Electrical & Electronics Technician to join our technical team and play a key role in the company’s continued growth and development. This is a senior, hands‑on position within a highly skilled multidisciplinary team working across advanced computing, engineering, and scientific research.

The successful candidate will contribute to the build, integration, and development of our state‑of‑the‑art quantum computing platforms and associated infrastructure. Working closely with engineers, scientists, and technicians across multiple disciplines, you will help deliver new systems, upgrade existing platforms, and enable ongoing research activity.

This position is ideally suited to a practical and versatile technician with strong electrical and electronic assembly skills, a methodical approach to problem‑solving, and experience working with complex technical equipment. The role offers the opportunity to work on novel technologies in a collaborative environment where technical expertise, initiative, and attention to detail are highly valued.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assembly, integration, and testing of electrical and electronic subsystems used in advanced computing and scientific equipment
  • Electrical wiring, cable preparation, connector assembly, and installation of low‑voltage electrical systems
  • Assembly of precision mechanical and electronic components, including PCB‑based assemblies
  • Diagnosing and resolving electrical and electronic faults during build, integration, and commissioning activities
  • Working from engineering drawings, schematics, assembly instructions, and technical documentation
  • Producing and maintaining build records, procedures, and technical documentation
  • Supporting prototype development, system upgrades, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Collaborating with mechanical, optics, software, and science teams to deliver integrated systems
  • Maintaining a safe, organised, and efficient laboratory and workshop environment and providing technical guidance and support to junior technicians as required

Requirements

Candidates should have 5+ years’ experience working in engineering, scientific, or technical environments, with proven experience assembling, integrating, and testing electrical and electronic systems. They must possess strong electrical and electronic fault‑finding and diagnostic skills, with proficiency in the use of standard test equipment, and be able to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and technical documentation. Experience assembling high‑precision, delicate, or complex components and assemblies is essential, along with hands‑on experience with electronic hardware, including PCB‑based assemblies. Candidates should also have experience working in laboratory, workshop, manufacturing, or other controlled technical environments.

Excellent attention to detail, combined with a structured and methodical approach to assembly, testing, and documentation, is required, as is the ability to work independently, take ownership of technical tasks, and deliver results with minimal supervision.

Desired Skills

  • Experience with surface‑mount and through‑hole assembly and rework
  • Experience working with scientific instrumentation, research hardware, or other high‑technology systems
  • Experience with vacuum systems, vacuum assemblies, or ultra‑high‑vacuum environments
  • Experience supporting prototype development, commissioning, or low‑volume manufacturing
  • Previous experience within a research organisation, advanced manufacturing environment, technology company, or start‑up
  • Relevant technical qualifications in electronics, electrical engineering, engineering technology, or a related discipline

Benefits

Be part of a team that’s shaping the future of quantum. We offer more than just a role; you’ll join a world‑class community of scientists, engineers and innovators working to unlock the full potential of quantum computing.

We offer a range of benefits, including opportunities to further your career alongside industry leaders, a competitive salary with IonQ stock options, an annual performance bonus, generous annual leave, flexible hybrid working, private medical and dental insurance for you and your family, and much more.

Join us and be part of the future of quantum computing. We’re proud to be an equal‑opportunity employer and welcome applicants from all backgrounds.
