Principal / Senior Supervisory Assistant

Job Purpose

Responsible individually or as a member of a team for the supervision of children and the maintenance of discipline for the children remaining on the school premises throughout the mid‑day break (the interval between the close of morning school and the re‑opening of school in the afternoon).

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the supervision of children in all areas of the school and grounds so that health and safety regulations are observed and school discipline is enforced.
  • Liaise with the principal/senior supervisory assistant on all matters relating to mid‑day supervision.
  • Deal with minor problems, accidents/sickness and report any serious incident to the principal/senior supervisory assistant immediately.
  • Supervise children consuming meals and packed lunches, including the movement of children between classrooms and dining areas, supervision of queues, seating arrangements and circulation, and the conduct of diners.
  • Collect dinner tickets where appropriate, distribute meals within the dining area, and perform ancillary duties such as cleaning spillages, clearing and cleaning tables, removing litter from all food consumption areas, and assisting children where necessary.
  • Delegate duties in connection with cash cafeterias.
  • Comply with applicable legal and safety requirements, including the Health and Safety at Work (NI) Order 1978, Acts of Parliament, Statutory Instruments, Regulations and codes of practice.
  • Carry out duties in the normal working conditions of the role, complete necessary paperwork, and perform duties up to and including those in the same grade within competence.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Experience of working with, or supervising children in a formal environment such as school, nursery or playgroup.
  • Knowledge of supervisory assistant responsibilities, child protection and safeguarding, and health and safety regulations relevant to the role.
  • Willingness to undertake job‑related training.
  • Ability to work flexibly, provide effective interpersonal and communication skills, work well in a team, plan and organise tasks, and reflect the school values/ethos.
  • Desirable: Minimum of three months’ experience in a formal environment, and additional evidence of the above skills.
