University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust is recruiting an enthusiastic and hardworking Apprentice Pensions Officer to join their Pensions Team based in Five Ways.

The Pensions Department consists of 20 staff members, providing pension services to 26,000 staff at UHB and for 25 other NHS Trusts, supporting over 130,000 NHS Pension members.

As a Pensions Officer you will be allocated a section of pension members to support, providing subject matter expertise on the NHS Pension Scheme. You will work with the team to ensure efficient and exceptional delivery of service.

Candidates must not already have a qualification in the specific apprenticeship standard, must have resided in the UK for at least 3 years, and if on a visa, the visa must cover the duration of the apprenticeship.

The apprenticeship will be delivered by an external training provider. You will spend most of your time learning on the job, with regular study time to complete the qualification, usually one day a week studying towards the apprenticeship with a clear training plan supported by manager and training provider.

Main Duties

You will be expected to prioritise your own workload to ensure timely completion meeting strict deadlines.

Using payroll systems and pension record processing systems, you will manage and prepare, input and check information for an allocated section of NHS Trusts. This includes basic and complicated calculations and the provision and receipt of sensitive and critical information.

Relate terms and conditions of service to the pension environment such as Agenda for Change, Trust policies, local agreements, and statutory legislation.

Provide and receive complex or sensitive information using developed interpersonal and communication skills, carrying out the job with empathy.

Ensure that work relating to pensions meets Audit and Standing Financial Instructions.

Previous NHS Pensions experience is desirable but not essential.

You need to be organised, efficient, able to prioritise own workload and meet deadlines, have excellent communication skills with a calming and pleasant telephone manner, understand complex legislation, and possess sound knowledge of IT packages such as Word, Excel and Outlook.

Above all you will be enthusiastic and hardworking.

Upon successful completion you will complete the apprenticeship programme within the required time period.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade 5 or above, including Maths and English

Experience

  • Relevant clerical experience
  • Experience working in an NHS Pensions environment
  • Experience managing own workload and pensions allocation

  • Ability to use specialised computerised applications requiring expert knowledge to manipulate and retrieve data (ESR and Pensions online)
  • Proven interpersonal skills to build and maintain working relationships
  • In depth understanding of client organisation, Agenda for Change regulations
  • Able to understand and interpret changes in local, national and statutory regulations
  • Knowledge of NHS Pension scheme
