Role Overview

Cybersecurity Sciences & Analytics (CSA) is a ~150‑person function focused on delivering advanced cyber analytics, AI‑driven insights, and scalable cybersecurity platforms across HSBC. This role is a hands‑on Solution Architect positioned within the Strategy & Governance team. You will be responsible for end‑to‑end solution design, supporting a major data platform transformation and enabling the development of next‑generation cybersecurity products. You will operate at the intersection of architecture, engineering, and governance, shaping technical direction while working closely with engineering and platform teams to deliver scalable, secure, and compliant solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own end‑to‑end solution design for cybersecurity applications (from requirements through to production support)
  • Produce and maintain architecture artefacts:
    • High‑Level Designs (HLDs)
    • Low‑Level Designs (LLDs)
    • Reference architectures
    • Architecture Decision Records (ADRs)
  • Contribute to the design and evolution of a petabyte‑scale cyber data platform
  • Support a major replatforming initiative from Databricks to an open‑source‑based architecture
  • Ensure solutions are scalable, resilient, and aligned to future state architecture
  • Evaluate open‑source technologies and vendors
  • Run proof of concepts (PoCs) and assess trade‑offs
  • Drive standardisation and reusable patterns across the platform
  • Partner with software engineering and platform teams to guide implementation
  • Provide hands‑on input where required (including coding where necessary)
  • Support delivery of cybersecurity products built on the data platform
  • Work closely with central architecture and governance teams
  • Ensure compliance with bank controls, policies, and regulatory requirements
  • Facilitate design forums and influence stakeholders without direct authority

Key Focus Areas of the Role

  • Data platform replatforming (open‑source big data ecosystem)
  • Solution design for custom cybersecurity products
  • Stakeholder engagement across architecture and governance functions

Skills & Experience Required

  • Strong experience in solution architecture and end‑to‑end system design
  • Proven experience with big data platforms at scale
  • Deep knowledge of open‑source data ecosystems, such as Apache Spark, Trino, Airflow, Apache Superset
  • Experience across cloud and on‑premise environmentsFamiliarity with AWS, GCP, and/or Azure
  • Ability to balance target architecture vs. delivery realities
  • Experience delivering solutions into production environments
  • Comfortable being both strategic and hands‑on
  • Experience in cybersecurity architecture, including threat modelling, identity & access management (IAM), encryption and key management, secure SDLC and vulnerability management (desirable but not essential; strong data platform experience is prioritised over deep cyber expertise)

Personal Attributes

  • Strong communicator – able to simplify complex technical concepts
  • Collaborative, with experience working across global teams
  • Proactive and self‑driven (“able to figure things out in ambiguity”)
  • Comfortable facilitating design workshops and governance forums
  • Able to influence without authority

Working Model

  • Hybrid role, with regular presence in Sheffield expected
  • Flexibility on office days, but emphasis on in‑person collaboration and stakeholder engagement

Additional Notes

  • Start date: 1st of September
  • Interview process: 1–2 stages
  • Ideal candidate profile: strong open‑source data platform background, architecture mindset with hands‑on capability, interest in applying expertise within cybersecurity domain
