Overview
The Head of Business, Law and Humanities will provide the leadership and vision to deliver excellent student success through the development of teaching, learning and assessment and curriculum innovation in these fields. The role also involves maintaining quality assurance and enhancement, embedding outstanding collaborative working with both the University and the Study Group network.
Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
- Collaborate with the Director of Campus Operations to articulate and implement a clear academic vision to drive continuous improvement and enable the Centre to achieve aspirational targets for student success in line with Study Group’s Vision 2025/6 strategic pillars.
- Collaborate with the Director of Campus Operations to articulate and implement a clear vision for the development of programmes and student experience to meet the overall strategic aims of the Centre as an effective, attractive and high‑quality pathway to UK HE.
- Contribute to strategic planning and policy development in areas including human resources, academic development, learning, teaching and assessment, and academic quality assurance and enhancement as part of the Centre management team.
- Identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats and determine appropriate actions to solve problems and enhance the delivery of Business, Law and Humanities subjects.
- Provide inspirational leadership to your team and across the Centre.
Academic Leadership and Management
- Provide effective and efficient academic leadership, management and coordination of staff resources across the Business, Law and Humanities pathway teams in the Centre, working closely with the Director of Campus Operations, the Head of Centre and the management team.
- Ensure the recruitment of Business, Law and Humanities staff is planned, timely and compliant.
- Participate in regular meetings with teaching and support staff and represent the Centre at appropriate events and meetings within the Centre, Cardiff University, the Study Group network and externally.
- Attend and actively contribute to relevant University Partnership Boards and Committees.
Quality Assurance and Enhancement
- Provide academic leadership to the team, taking overall responsibility for academic standards, learning opportunities’ quality, and the accuracy and completeness of published information in accordance with policies and procedures of the Centre, Provider and University.
- Support the operation of committee meetings and the implementation of a Student Outcomes Plan.
- Oversee and respond to External Examiner(s) with regard to student outcomes and assessment processes; assist in providing timely reports and responses to the Study Group Central Quality team.
- Contribute to and monitor progress against the Centre Action Plan and report on these to the Centre Director and governance committees as required.
- Ensure the Centre’s Quality Assurance framework is implemented across the team and contribute to the development and submission of the Annual Monitoring Report.
- Analyse data and feedback to monitor progress towards progression targets, planning and implementing remedial actions where necessary.
- Contribute to the delivery of annual module evaluation, reporting progress and areas for improvement directly to the relevant Board.
- Support the periodic re‑approval process, including the development of programmes in conjunction with the Study Group Quality Office and partners in Cardiff University.
- Collaborate to effectively respond to feedback from the University Department Link Tutors, using performance data to analyse areas for improvement and support student transition to HE study.
- Any other duties as required from time to time by the Director of Campus Operations.
Operational Leadership and Management
- Contribute towards effective day‑to‑day management of the ISC, including inducting staff, implementing health and safety policies, arranging cover for absent staff, organising events such as student induction and open days, and responding to the needs of students, Cardiff University, staff, parents and sponsors.
- Collaborate to ensure timetables and assessments are scheduled efficiently and to deadlines, working with Student Experience Senior Coordinators and the Director of Campus Operations.
- Work closely with Subject Leaders (where applicable) and the Director of Campus Operations to integrate current and relevant subject, academic skills and language developments into programmes.
- Collaborate with the centre e‑champion to develop the Centre’s VLE, pre‑arrival materials and any online learning opportunities.
- Monitor progression tracking activities and student outcomes planning within the Centre, reporting to the Director of Campus Operations and relevant committees.
- Monitor agreed Key Performance Indicators to demonstrate effectiveness in achieving the Centre’s objectives and manage performance where required.
- Contribute effectively to the Centre’s Safeguarding responsibilities, Safer Recruitment actions, and ensure all teaching staff are aware of their obligations.
- Manage and address day‑to‑day issues that arise, ensuring solutions are sought and problems resolved effectively and efficiently.
Student Monitoring
- Share accountability for ensuring the Centre is compliant with UKVI regulations regarding student attendance reporting via the Student Information System (SIS).
- Ensure attendance checks are in place and regularly reviewed to ensure students attend, complete work, and prepare for assessments; record issues and take action with problems; maintain records and results for academic committees.
About You
- Bachelor’s degree and a postgraduate qualification in a relevant subject (essential)
- Post‑doctoral qualification in a relevant subject (desired)
- Leadership and management training
- Leadership and management experience in a teaching and learning environment
- Experience of leading a team to achieve high levels of student academic performance and outcomes against agreed targets
- Experience of delivering a Business, Law or Humanities subject to international students in UK Higher or Further Education
- Experience of planning and running complex education courses in Business, Law and Humanities
- Experience of leading the provision of academic skills within HE environments
- Experience of partnership working in the education sector
