Role Summary
Our Controls Centre of Excellence, located in Nailsea near Bristol, offers a 4‑year apprenticeship in Embedded Electronic Systems Design & Development. The role provides a foundation for future specialization as a Hardware Engineer, Software Engineer, or Systems Engineer. Apprentices will attend day‑release college at UCW Weston-super-Mare and the University of the West of England (UWE), while rotating through engineering teams to gain hands‑on experience in design, testing, and production of hardware and software products.
Responsibilities
- Design functional electronic systems and circuits at component level.
- Write and document structured code that meets industry norms and facilitates future maintenance.
- Develop test plans for products designed.
- Create basic project plans, including resource allocation, scheduling, contingency planning, and strategies for timeline recovery.
- Apply fundamentals of structured software design.
- Use Business IT/Systems tools, including Engineering Documentation packages, Quality, and HSE systems.
Qualifications & Requirements
Applicants should have a minimum of 96 UCAS points (3 A‑Levels grade C or above, including Maths and one STEM subject such as Physics, ICT, Computing, or Electronics) or an Extended BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Engineering with Distinction. Additionally, five GCSEs at grade 5 or above (e.g., Mathematics, English, Double Science) are required. Prior to 2017, equivalent qualifications count as grades C and above.
