Overview

About the team

Safeguarding is at the heart of everything we do. As the regulator of more than 850,000 nursing and midwifery professionals across the UK, we have a responsibility not only to protect the public through our regulatory functions, but also to safeguard the wellbeing of everyone who comes into contact with us.

This role is offered on an initial fixed term contract until 30th April 2027.

Our Safeguarding Team plays a critical role in ensuring that vulnerable adults, children and young people are protected, that risks are identified and managed appropriately, and that safeguarding is embedded throughout the organisation. Working across all areas of the NMC, the team provides expert advice, drives organisational learning, supports complex decision‑making and helps ensure we meet our legal and regulatory obligations.

We influence decision‑making at the highest levels, support colleagues managing challenging situations and help shape how safeguarding is understood and delivered across the NMC.

Reporting To: Nicola Burns-muir

Your role & impact

As Senior Safeguarding Manager, you will lead the day‑to‑day operational delivery of safeguarding across the NMC, ensuring that safeguarding is embedded into organisational decision‑making, regulatory processes and culture. You will provide expert advice and oversight on some of the most complex safeguarding concerns encountered by the organisation, often involving significant risk, vulnerable individuals and sensitive circumstances.

You will drive the delivery of the Safeguarding Hub, ensuring that safeguarding concerns are identified early, risks are assessed effectively and appropriate action is taken to protect those who may be at risk of harm. Working closely with colleagues across Fitness to Practice, Public Support Services, Professional Support and Engagement, Legal Services and other functions, you will help ensure that safeguarding expertise informs decision‑making across the organisation.

You will be accountable for providing specialist advice on high‑risk and complex safeguarding cases, making difficult decisions where there may be competing considerations, significant organisational risk or potential impact on public protection. You will also work directly with safeguarding partners and statutory agencies to ensure concerns are escalated appropriately and robust action is taken where required.

Beyond individual cases, you will play a pivotal role in shaping and delivering the NMC’s safeguarding ambitions. You will identify emerging themes and risks, lead strategic improvement initiatives, oversee quality assurance activity, contribute to organisational learning and support the implementation of an ambitious safeguarding work programme.

As a senior leader within the safeguarding function, you will manage and develop safeguarding colleagues, deputise for the Head of Safeguarding when required and represent the NMC at internal and external meetings, case conferences and stakeholder forums.
