Location: London
Job Description:

At Cleo, we’re building a hyper‑intelligent financial advisor in every pocket, powering personalized growth for our 4M+ users. Our team is fast‑growing, profitable, and deeply committed to making a real difference for every person who uses our product.

About the Role

We are looking for an ML Engineering Manager to lead the Machine Learning efforts across our Growth team. The role entails building systems that drive revenue growth and maximize lifetime value for every user.

What We’re Building

  • ML‑powered prompt recommender systems that decide which offer or action to show each user.
  • Personalized messaging and incentive systems based on user context and history.
  • Incrementality testing to measure true causal lift from our interventions.
  • Multi‑armed bandits and online learning to optimize in near real‑time.
  • Scoring and ranking systems that balance short‑term revenue with long‑term retention.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Own the ML roadmap for Growth, prioritizing high‑impact projects in partnership with PMs and leadership.
  • Design and deliver systems that personalize prompts, offers, and messaging to individual users.
  • Drive continuous improvement across ML models, from concept to experiment to production.
  • Build & Mentor Your Team: recruit, onboard, and develop 3‑5 ML Engineers, fostering a high‑performing culture.
  • Balance mentorship with accountability, support career growth, and create clear pathways for leveling up.
  • Collaborate at Scale: work closely with Growth Marketing Engineering, Product, Analytics, and leadership to align infrastructure, experimentation, and user experience.
  • Communicate ML impact clearly across the business.
  • Own Technical Excellence: review ML designs and code, guide architectural decisions on model serving, latency, and scalability, maintain infrastructure and tooling, and lead incident response.
  • Drive Experimentation & Learning: champion a test‑driven approach, ensure rigorous experiment design, build a learning culture, and publish learnings internally and externally.

About You

You are a strong technical leader with hands‑on ML experience, particularly in recommender systems, uplift modeling, and ad‑targeting. You have shipped ML products at scale, managed teams (ideally 3‑5 engineers), and understand the balance between rigorous experimentation and speed to market. You care deeply about building high‑impact models and enjoy leading teams to do the same.

What Makes You a Good Fit

  • Technical depth: you code, debug, and review ML systems and participate in high‑impact projects.
  • Growth mindset: learn quickly, adapt, and challenge assumptions with data.
  • Direct communication: you are honest, pragmatic, and convey ideas clearly.
  • Cross‑functional leadership: translate ML complexity into business impact while collaborating across PMs, Data Engineers, and Analytics.
  • User‑centric: prioritize real‑world outcomes such as retention, revenue, and lifetime value.

Technical Experience

  • 5+ years in ML/Data Science roles, with at least 2+ years in a leadership or senior technical IC capacity.
  • Hands‑on experience shipping ML products end‑to‑end, especially in personalization or growth.
  • Strong fundamentals in statistical inference, experimental design, and causal reasoning.
  • Production ML experience: model serving, latency optimization, A/B testing, monitoring.
  • Comfortable with Python, SQL, and cloud platforms (GCP, AWS, etc.).
  • Experience with typical ML stacks (scikit‑learn, XGBoost, TensorFlow/PyTorch).

Leadership Experience

  • Track record of building and scaling high‑performing teams.
  • Experience hiring, onboarding, and developing engineers from L2 to L4+.
  • Ability to give technical feedback, conduct code reviews, and provide architectural guidance.
  • Balance autonomy with accountability and navigate ambiguity.

Mindset & Values

  • Impact‑focused: deliver models that drive business outcomes.
  • Intellectually curious and humble, excited to learn and teach.
  • Effective communicator across technical and non‑technical contexts.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain complex ML concepts clearly.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation (base + equity) with 3‑yearly reviews.
  • Salary band: £150,000‑170,000 (London, Hybrid) or £140,000‑160,000 (UK, Remote).
  • Fast‑growing startup backed by leading VC firms.
  • Clear progression plan and career growth opportunities.
  • Flexibility to balance work and personal life.
  • 4‑month performance reviews, generous pay increases, equity top‑ups.
  • 25 days annual leave + public holidays (increasing by 1 day per year up to 30).
  • 1 month paid sabbatical after 4 years.
  • 6% employer‑matched pension (UK).
  • Private medical insurance, dental cover, life assurance.
  • Online mental health support via Spill.
  • Enhanced parental leave and workplace nursery scheme.
  • Paid access to AI platforms (ChatGPT, Codex, Claude) and latest AI coding models.
  • Choice of Windows or Apple computer.
  • Regular socials and activities (online and in‑person).

We strongly encourage applications from people of colour, the LGBTQ+ community, people with disabilities, neurodivergent people, parents, carers, and people from lower socio‑economic backgrounds. Cleo AI is an equal opportunity employer.
