South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) is looking to recruit a Consultant Psychiatrist for the South West Short Term Support Team (SWSTS) on a 12‑month fixed term contract.
About the Team
SWSTS is part of the South West Living Well Centre (SWLWC), one of the three locality LWCs in Lambeth (North, South East and SW). Each LWC has one Short Term Support Team and one Focussed Support Team; the former provides assessments and brief interventions while the latter offers medium to longer‑term care and support for those with mental health problems and associated psycho‑societal difficulties. The three LWCs mirror the developing Primary Care Networks (PCN) across the borough.
SWFS is based at the SWLWC, alongside SWFS and South West Social Care Team, covering the PCNs of Streatham, AT Medics and Clapham.
The team normally receives 80‑85 new referrals per month, of which approximately 75% are eventually accepted for assessment following screening. The team discharges about 60 patients per month on average to primary care or another team within or outside the borough, with an overall caseload of around 200 patients. The post holder will share responsibilities for oversight of care with the co‑consultant.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead scheduled reviews (15 per week), comprising joint reviews with care coordinators and diagnostic clarification assessments.
- Provide senior medical input as consultant psychiatrist / Approved Clinician for patients treated under SWSTS, and participate in joint senior leadership for the team and the SWLWC.
- Offer reciprocal Approved Clinician cover, including Section 12 cover for leave, study leave and sickness of senior medical staff in Lambeth during working hours.
- Provide out‑of‑hour senior medical input as per the Lambeth consultant on‑call rota (1:20) with a Category ‘B’ 1% banding supplement.
- Supervise one full‑time GPVT and mentor year 3 medical students of King’s College London allocated to the team for longitudinal placements.
- Take advantage of opportunities for innovative service development, quality improvement, and management/leadership development within the LWNA and the Trust.
- Engage with academic and research collaborations, as SLaM is part of King’s Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre and hosts a biomedical research centre in partnership with the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King’s College London.
