Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist – Medical Retina

We are seeking a dynamic and forward‑thinking Consultant Ophthalmologist to join our specialist team covering North Cumbria.

Role Overview

Support a “whole system” approach to eye care across a population of approximately 360,000, with referrals from South West Scotland and West Northumbria.

Responsibilities

• Provide general ophthalmic services across North Cumbria.
• Develop and implement innovative ophthalmic practice bridging acute hospital care, community and primary care.
• Lead and participate in high‑volume cataract surgery and other subspecialty procedures.
• Offer expert clinical opinion on diverse ophthalmology problems, both emergency and elective.
• Take full and independent responsibility for patient care and liaise with clinical staff.
• Advise on efficient service delivery and support audit management.
• Cover on‑call duties as required.
• Contribute to teaching undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff.
• Supervise postgraduate research and assist with medical audit.
• Maintain high standards of clinical governance and patient safety.

Qualifications

• FRCOphth or equivalent.
• Full GMC registration.
• Post‑CCT fellowship in ophthalmology subspecialty; holder of CCT or within six months of award.
• Inclusion on the Specialist Registrar in Ophthalmology register within six months of inclusion on GMC specialist register.
• High clinical skill and expertise in ophthalmology.
• Experience with high‑volume cataract surgery.
• Experience with ROP, infant eye screening and examination.
• Strong communication, interpersonal and team skills.
• Proficiency in IT and presentation skills.
• Evidence of continuous professional development.
