Job Overview
This is an excellent opportunity for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join our team of diverse, talented healthcare professionals delivering care that is efficient and deeply centred on the patient. The position has been created following new funding to expand services in our prison portfolio.
Working Arrangements
The post will be divided as follows: 2 days at HMP Erlestoke and 2 days at HMP Guy’s Marsh. The role is allocated 2.5 SPA within the job plan for activities such as teaching, training, clinical management, clinical governance, service development and other relevant duties. We are keen to accommodate flexibility and encourage applicants with varied availability; working patterns, days and number of PA’s are open to discussion, including full‑time options.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide medical leadership to the mental health in‑reach teams at each site.
- Assessment and management of chronic psychotic illness, mood disorders, ADHD and other conditions requiring pharmacological input.
- Deliver outpatient care within the prison healthcare department and case‑work by the in‑reach team.
- Collaborate with psychology teams to address trauma and personality disorder, working within a trauma‑informed care model.
- Coordinate with a dedicated substance misuse service and the prison’s offending behaviour programmes.
- Manage transfers under the Mental Health Act and maintain s12(2) approval lead on transfers.
- Support professional development through teaching, training, clinical governance, service development and other relevant activities.
Notes
The prison population is complex, with significant over‑representation of SMI, neurodevelopmental disorders, substance misuse, trauma and personality disorder compared to the general population.
