Role Description
The BMS Consulting Engineer will act as the technical authority for Building Management Systems (BMS) solutions across projects. This is a consultancy‑led role with no direct installation responsibility. The successful candidate will be responsible for defining, validating, and assuring the quality of BMS and smart building solutions, managing external contractors, and ensuring systems meet client, regulatory, and company standards.
The role requires a strong blend of traditional BMS engineering expertise and up‑to‑date knowledge of smart building platforms, data integration, and digital building technologies.
Technical Leadership & Solution Ownership
- Develop and define BMS and smart building solutions in line with project requirements and client expectations
- Act as the technical authority for all BMS‑related aspects across the project lifecycle
- Produce and review system architecture designs, specifications, and control strategies
- Ensure interoperability between BMS, IoT platforms, and other building systems
- Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend innovative solutions
Project Oversight & Contractor Management
- Manage and coordinate third‑party BMS contractors and system integrators
- Review contractor designs, submittals, and commissioning plans
- Monitor project delivery to ensure compliance with specifications and quality standards
- Attend site meetings and provide technical guidance as required
- Ensure works are delivered in line with programme, cost, and performance expectations
Due Diligence & Quality Assurance
- Act as the company’s representative for BMS technical due diligence
- Audit and verify system designs, installations, and commissioning activities
- Identify risks, gaps, and non‑compliance issues and ensure corrective actions
- Validate system performance against design intent and KPIs
- Produce detailed technical reports and documentation
Smart Building & Digital Integration
- Stay current with smart building platforms, analytics tools, and digital solutions
- Support integration of BMS with:
- IoT platforms
- Cloud‑based analytics and dashboards
- Advise on data strategies, including data structure, accessibility, and cybersecurity considerations
- Promote the use of smart technologies to enhance building performance and user experience
Client & Stakeholder Engagement
- Act as a trusted advisor to clients on BMS and smart building solutions
- Translate technical concepts into clear recommendations for non‑technical stakeholders
- Support business development by contributing technical input to proposals and bids
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, contractors, and technology providers
Skills & Experience
The following attributes are essential:
- Proven experience in BMS engineering (design, commissioning, or consultancy)
- Strong knowledge of major BMS platforms (e.g. Trend, Tridium/Niagara, Siemens, Schneider, Honeywell)
- Experience with system integration and open protocols (BACnet, Modbus, MQTT, etc.)
- Demonstrable experience managing contractors and external suppliers
- Strong understanding of building services (HVAC, energy systems, controls)
- Ability to review and produce technical specifications and drawings
- Excellent problem‑solving and analytical skills
- Full, valid UK driving licence.
The following attributes are desirable:
- Experience in a consultancy or client‑side role
- Knowledge of smart building technologies and SaaS platforms
- Familiarity with:
- Digital twins
- Energy analytics platforms
- ESG and sustainability reporting tools
- Experience with data visualisation tools or APIs
- Understanding of cybersecurity principles in building systems
Qualifications
- Degree or equivalent in Building Services Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline
