About NHS Shetland

NHS Shetland is the most northerly health service in Scotland. We are a small organisation, with circa 700 staff looking after the health needs of 23,000 people spread across 15 islands. However, what we lack in size, we more than make up for by way of highly integrated, person‑centred and multi‑professional ethos that characterises every aspect of our operations.

Role Overview

We are looking for a consultant physician to join a team of Medical and Emergency Medicine Consultants in the provision of healthcare in the Shetland Islands. The role is for someone who wishes to practice a wide‑ranging generalist role rather than a super‑specialist or narrow focused physician.

Responsibilities

The post holder will be expected to provide initial care for acutely unwell adults across a range of medical presentations, to manage a number of inpatients under their name, and to provide general medical clinics. The medical team will work closely and collaboratively, offering mutual support and advice, with support from local colleagues and specialist colleagues at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

Benefits

We are offering a 12‑month full‑time post (WTE 1.0) covering maternity leave with a standard contract. Relevant travel and accommodation costs will be covered by NHS Shetland but may be classed as a Benefit in Kind and subject to tax.

Why Shetland?

This is a beautiful part of the world with a satisfyingly different lifestyle from metropolitan centres. The diverse nature of Shetland’s culture, the stunning scenery, wildlife, local dialect, and the spread of different islands all create unique professional and personal challenges.

Application Assistance

If you require assistance or encounter any technical issues with your application, please e‑mail support at including the vacancy reference number and “NHS Shetland” in the subject line or by calling 0161 850 2004.

PVG Scheme

Preferred candidates will be required to join the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update prior to a formal offer of employment being made.

Equal Opportunities

In promoting equal opportunities, we welcome applications from all sections of the community.
