Salary: £42,500 – 55,000 per year
Requirements
- We need someone who can turn a business problem into working code with the judgement to choose the right approach.
- You should have shipped backend systems in production and be able to work independently within a defined scope.
- You should be fluent in at least one modern backend stack and understand databases, APIs, queues, testing, and deployment.
- You should have built with LLMs in production, or be ready to deepen that experience, with an understanding of prompt design, vector databases, retrieval, and model failure modes.
- You should be comfortable moving between languages and choosing the one that best fits the project, with the ability to justify your decisions.
- You should be able to explain automated workflows clearly to business owners.
- You should want to work in a small team building products people rely on.
- Strong applicants will be fluent in some of our stack and able to pick up the rest quickly.
- Experience with PHP and MySQL, JavaScript and TypeScript, or Python is highly relevant.
- Bonus experience includes React Native, workflow automation platforms, custom WordPress theme and plugin development, WooCommerce, Sentry.io, custom PHP servers, and SEO.
Responsibilities
- Build backend systems for bespoke client work, taking features from brief to delivery against an agreed design.
- Help design and develop our Orbit platform, the core product our business runs on.
- Build internal tools that make our delivery team faster and our builds more consistent.
- Build production systems on top of large language models, including APIs such as Claude and OpenAI, with retries, rate limits, structured outputs, and human review.
- Take AI-assisted prototypes and harden them for production with appropriate testing and review.
- Design secure walled-garden AI environments using Claude for Platforms and use Claude Code for fast AI-assisted development.
- Build and connect agent workflows that link AI agents to client tools such as email, CRM, and Slack.
- Integrate and manage Stripe payments and monitor transactions through the Stripe dashboard.
- Run infrastructure on Cloudflare and AWS, with Twilio for messaging.
- Keep client data secure by design, using sound encryption and protocols, and ensure all builds comply with UK GDPR.
- Maintain codebase integrity and manage deployments with Git, hosted on GitHub.
