Job Description:

Data Governance Manager | Greenfield Build, You Set the Playbook | Global Price-Reporting Business Where Data Is the Product

  • Location: London – 6 days a month
  • Reports directly to the Head of Data & AI

The prices this business produces are not a by-product of the work, they are the product. It is a global price-reporting and market-intelligence business serving commodity markets across metals, agriculture, forest products and new-generation energy, and its indices and assessments are relied on by traders, risk teams and analysts worldwide to make real money decisions. That is the whole reason this role exists. When data is the commercial proposition, governing it well is not a compliance footnote, it is what protects the value engine of the business.

This is a greenfield role. There is no data governance framework in place today and no one currently doing the job, so the lift is genuinely ahead of you. You will report directly to a senior data leader who sits one level below the CTIO, and you will own data governance end to end: assessing where the business is now, deciding where governance adds the most value first, and building from there. The brief is not arrive with the perfect framework. It is find where poor data is blocking something real, fix it, get some runs on the board, and build the foundational capability in the background as you go.

A word on what this is not. If your pitch is a tidy two-year roadmap and the same data council you have stood up three times before, this is not the role. The hiring manager has seen plenty of that and wants someone with more commercial verve: someone who treats governance as an enabler that unblocks the business, prioritises pragmatically with imperfect information, and uses their own judgement rather than running the standard playbook.

What They’re Looking For:

  • Data governance delivered in practice, taking frameworks from concept through to implementation
  • Establishing governance structures (councils, stewardship networks, working groups) where none existed, through influence rather than mandate
  • Strong stakeholder skills, building trust quickly and working across functions without direct authority
  • Able to articulate the value of governance in commercial terms to non-technical audiences
  • Comfortable setting a clear direction and making a start with incomplete information
  • Manager-level experience, even if only once and for one to two years

What You’ll Work With:

  • Snowflake (lakehouse)
  • Power BI
  • Cataloguing and lineage tooling (Collibra, Atlan, Alation, Apache Atlas or OvalEdge)
  • Proprietary pricing databases that hold the core product data

Nice to Haves:

  • Data protection and data privacy
  • Financial data, price reporting, market intelligence or information services background
  • AI data governance: model governance, training-data provenance, lineage through AI systems
  • DAMA CDMP, DCAM or similar certification
  • Data commercialisation: licensing, data products, monetising proprietary data

Why Join:

  • You are applying governance to the core value engine of the business, because the product itself is data. Few governance roles sit that close to the commercial centre.
  • It is genuinely greenfield. You set the standards, choose the tooling, and shape how the capability looks from scratch.
  • Real backing from the top. The CEO is engaged, investment is available, and you will not be asked to deliver any of this with nothing. The conversation is what do you need.
  • A route to building and leading a team. You start as an individual contributor reporting to the data leader, with budgeted hires to manage as the function grows.
  • Genuinely unanswered problems to make your mark on, including how lineage and cataloguing should work when an AI sits in the delivery chain. No one has a clean answer to that yet.
