An exciting opportunity for an Underwriter to join a specialist commercial insurance business. This role is responsible for assessing, pricing, and managing risks within an allocated portfolio, ensuring profitable growth while maintaining strong broker relationships. Working within delegated underwriting authority, you will evaluate complex submissions, make sound underwriting decisions, and contribute to the ongoing success and development of the business.
Key Responsibilities
- Review insurance applications, financial information, and supporting documentation to assess risk acceptability.
- Underwrite new and existing business in line with underwriting guidelines, regulatory requirements, and delegated authority levels.
- Analyse risks and recommend appropriate pricing, coverage terms, and policy enhancements.
- Prepare and issue quotations while responding to broker and stakeholder enquiries in a timely and professional manner.
- Communicate underwriting decisions, including referrals, requirements, adverse decisions, and declinatures, both verbally and in writing.
- Monitor the quality, profitability, and performance of the portfolio and contribute to management reporting.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers and key business partners.
- Support business development and marketing initiatives, including broker meetings and market visits where required.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of market trends, regulatory developments, and industry best practices.
- Collaborate with senior underwriters and management on complex or referral risks.
- Develop proficiency across underwriting systems and contribute to maintaining accurate underwriting records and data.
- Support wider team objectives and undertake additional responsibilities as required.
What We’re Looking For
- Previous underwriting experience within the commercial insurance market.
- Strong understanding of underwriting principles, risk assessment, pricing, and portfolio management.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to make sound commercial decisions.
- Strong negotiation, communication, and relationship management capabilities.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with colleagues and external stakeholders.
- Good organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other business-related software applications.
- Commitment to delivering excellent service and maintaining high professional standards.
Desirable but Not Essential
- Experience within specialist commercial insurance lines.
- Exposure to broker-facing business development activities.
- Knowledge of relevant insurance systems and platforms.
- Progress towards or completion of a recognised insurance qualification.
