Overview
Environmental Health Practitioners protect public health, improve living and working conditions, and support local businesses. Through education, advice, investigation and enforcement we tackle a range of issues such as nuisance, pollution, housing, food safety and wider public health concerns. In this apprentice role you will benefit from a structured four‑year programme that combines a fully funded CIEH accredited BSc (Hons) Environmental Health Practitioner degree with workplace learning.
Program Structure
- One day a week (20%) designated for University study – either online or in person.
- Four days a week (80%) working mainly with the Environmental Health Community Protection team, delivering services in public health, noise nuisance, anti‑social behaviour, environmental and nuisance protection, investigations, consultations and additional opportunities in housing, food safety and health and safety.
Responsibilities
- Respond to complaints and enquiries, managing initial enquiries and investigation caseloads.
- Assist senior officers with inspections and investigations.
- Liaise with members of the public, colleagues, councillors and external agencies.
- Conduct proactive compliance work and projects, take evidence such as samples and photos.
- Maintain accurate records and use council systems to support investigations and decision‑making.
- Support enforcement of standards and regulations that protect public health and safety.
Candidate Profile
- Self‑motivated to learn and develop new skills.
- Excellent communication skills and able to work with a wide range of people.
- Organised and able to manage competing priorities in both the workplace and study.
- Good IT and written skills.
- Enjoy problem‑solving and investigating issues.
- Able to work independently and as part of a team.
- Demonstrate professionalism, integrity and a commitment to public service.
- Able to travel throughout Herefordshire and, where necessary, work outside normal office hours.
- Eligible for apprenticeship (Grade 4/C or above in GCSE English and Maths or equivalent Level 2; 80 UCAS points or equivalent).
