Job Summary

Amazon Web Services is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to perform design engineering activities for new build projects. As part of a global engineering team, you will be responsible for the design and continuous innovation of our rapidly expanding data center footprint across the EMEA region.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Lead within the group and with internal and external teams that support our data centres.
  • Understand how design decisions impact building and campus level layouts.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to understand user requirements.
  • Participate in site selection reviews.
  • Manage design consultancy firms to create, review and release data center designs.
  • Manage change, versioning and configuration control.
  • Work with local utilities to define and understand site utility requirements.
  • Define and approve project scopes, RFPs and RFIs.
  • Work with local Agencies Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) to ensure compliance with city/county regulations and building codes.
  • Collaborate with commissioning teams to validate installation, operation, and performance of systems.
  • Work on concurrent projects in multiple geographic regions.
  • Travel for site review and conduct engineering evaluations, audits, and site launches.
  • Review and approve equipment submittals.
  • Support troubleshooting and conduct root cause analysis (RCA) and corrective action (CA) for design-related problems.
  • Define project scopes and provide support during construction phases.
  • Specify appropriate mechanical equipment with regional vendors and manufacturers.
  • Provide technical support for information requests during construction phases.
  • Offer creative, out-of-the-box solutions.

A Day in the Life

Engineers will be responsible for innovation, design and leading design consultants for new and existing AWS regions by delivering designs from concept to the permit and construction document set. You must be capable of defining critical equipment specifications and approving equipment submittals. Engineers will directly support construction and be part of the process from site selection review through commissioning and ultimately turnover, acting as the subject matter expert in their field.

Basic Qualifications

  • Knowledge of critical data center mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Experience in data center design, construction, operations, or facility maintenance.
  • Experience in industrial or commercial engineering in mission‑critical facilities including data centers, power generation, or oil and gas facilities.
  • Experience researching new designs, technologies, and construction methods of data center equipment and facilities.
  • Bachelor’s degree or above in Mechanical Engineering.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineering or Architectural license.
  • Knowledge of building codes and regulations for your region.
  • Experience carrying design concepts through exploration, development, and into deployment or mass production.
  • Experience reading, interpreting, and creating construction drawings, specifications, and submittal documents.
