Medical Secretary

Band 4 Medical Secretary (37.5 hours per week, permanent) working within the Surgical Care Collaborative at the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle.

The closing date for applications is 17 July 2026.

This role will be crucial to the efficient day‑to‑day delivery of the service, providing administrative and secretarial support to two Consultants and their supporting staff.

Responsibilities

In this role you will often be the first point of contact for our patients; a professional, patient‑focused approach is essential at all times. You will provide a high standard of administration support to the clinical team, liaising with other departments, patients, NHS Trusts and external agencies.

  • Compile theatre lists.
  • Track the pathway of a cancer patient.
  • Provide up‑to‑date information on a patient’s RTT pathway.
  • Update systems to reflect administrative changes.
  • Coordinate and prioritise workload to meet deadlines.

Qualifications

  • GCSE English language (minimum grade C) or equivalent.
  • RSA typewriting/word processing Level 3 or NVQ Level 3 in Business Administration, or equivalent experience.
  • Medical secretarial diploma or equivalent.

Skills and Experience

  • Medical terminology knowledge.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and PAS.
  • Understanding of the Data Protection Act, Freedom of Information Act, access to health records and defensible documentation.
  • Ability to use initiative within a team environment and work independently.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Adaptable disposition, calm under pressure, and able to handle a busy workload efficiently.

  • Willingness to develop further relevant skills.
  • Willingness to travel across sites for work and/or meetings.

Salary: Â28,392 to Â31,157 per annum (pro rata).
