Role Overview
As an Assistant Vice President Sanctions Screening Tuning at MUFG in London, you will immerse yourself in a dynamic environment where your analytical acumen will be instrumental in shaping robust financial crime detection frameworks. Your day‑to‑day activities will involve collaborating with regional teams to refine sanctions screening models using advanced statistical methods and machine learning techniques. You will play a crucial role in identifying emerging risks through detailed data analysis while supporting policy development initiatives that underpin effective compliance operations. By preparing insightful reports for senior stakeholders and participating in strategic optimisation projects, you will help ensure that MUFG remains at the forefront of industry best practices.
Responsibilities
- Provide expert analytics support for developing, optimizing and modifying rules that enhance sanctions screening systems designed to detect financial crime across multiple jurisdictions.
- Identify detection scenarios and recommend customer segmentation strategies to improve the effectiveness of MUFG’s Global Financial Crime Directorate (GFCD) monitoring systems.
- Tune and optimize AML, KYC and sanctions screening models by leveraging predictive analytics and advanced data science techniques to drive continuous improvement.
- Coordinate the implementation of new detection scenarios in collaboration with regional I&A teams to ensure seamless integration into global models.
- Support the development and refinement of policies and procedures related to sanctions screening optimisation, ensuring alignment with regulatory requirements and internal standards.
- Prepare comprehensive reports for internal stakeholders that highlight transactional data analysis trends, scenario effectiveness, risks identified and recommendations for further tuning activities.
- Conduct ATL/BTL testing on models, interpret results for performance evaluation, and memorialize model selection rationales along with defined assumptions.
- Collaborate closely with cross‑functional teams within GFCD to ensure efficient operations with clearly defined roles and responsibilities across business lines.
- Assist in large‑scale strategic optimisation programmes aimed at enhancing MUFG’s sanctions screening capabilities throughout EMEA.
- Engage in model validation processes by documenting methodologies used, supporting regulatory submissions or audits as required.
Qualifications
- Substantial hands‑on involvement in AML or sanctions screening environments within major banking institutions or consultancies.
- Advanced programming abilities in SQL or Python (or R) alongside deep familiarity with statistical modelling approaches relevant to compliance operations.
- Experience navigating complex regulatory landscapes, particularly those governing model governance, and preparing thorough documentation for audit purposes.
- Strong interpersonal strengths for building trust‑based relationships across functional boundaries while communicating intricate analytical insights with clarity.
- Commitment to continuous professional development evidenced by relevant certifications such as CAMS or CGSS.
- Proficiency in SQL, Python or R for conducting sophisticated data analysis tasks relevant to compliance systems.
- Comprehensive understanding of statistical sampling methods and model validation techniques applicable to financial crime prevention.
- Hands‑on experience using vendor platforms such as Actimize, Hotscan or Finscan for sanctions screening purposes.
- Solid grasp of machine learning concepts including decision trees, neural networks or entity resolution within a data science context.
- Well‑developed knowledge of regulatory expectations regarding model governance and experience preparing documentation for audits or regulatory submissions.
- Ability to manage stakeholder relationships effectively both within local functions and across international teams operating under dual mandates.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills enabling clear articulation of technical findings to diverse audiences including non‑technical stakeholders.
- Degree or equivalent industry standard qualification required; relevant certifications preferred.
