Position Overview

A permanent Maintenance Technician position is available with Oxford College, offering a salary up to £34,732 annually. The role is part of the Estates Team and involves maintaining buildings, gardens, and mechanical services to the highest standard, ensuring heating, hot water, and all facilities function safely for the college community.

Applicants must hold a valid driving licence to travel between sites by company van and should live within 30 minutes of Oxford City Centre. The position requires flexibility for a weekend call‑out rota, covering emergencies roughly one in five weekends.

Key Responsibilities

  • Respond to maintenance issues raised by students and staff under the direction of the Maintenance Manager, acting independently where required.
  • Plan work efficiently and prioritise tasks appropriately.
  • Carry out typical maintenance tasks, including plumbing repairs to heating and hot and cold‑water systems, basic carpentry for failed doors, windows or furniture, replacement of faulty white goods and appliances, and clearing blocked drains or showers.
  • Participate in and lead small upgrade projects such as plumbing upgrades/modifications, building stud partition walls, fitting new doors, room redecorations, and kitchen fittings.
  • Perform routine activities: meter readings, top‑up/monitoring of water softener equipment, changing extraction filters, fire alarm testing, and checking lifts and elevators.
  • Uphold maintenance records and support the Maintenance Manager in keeping up‑to‑date records of completed work.
  • Undertake seasonal grounds maintenance, including lawn mowing, hedge trimming, and weeding at the main College site and off‑site houses in the city.

Essential Skills

  • Good all‑round general knowledge of building maintenance and practical experience in carrying out maintenance work.
  • Understanding of Health and Safety legislation relevant to this position.
  • Physical fitness adequate for the demands of the job.

Desirable Skills

  • Plumbing experience and knowledge of commercial and domestic heating and hot water systems.
  • Good general handyman and caretaker skills.
  • Garden maintenance experience.
  • Relevant H&S or First Aid training (job specific training can be provided).

  • Salary offered: £34,500 per annum, with overtime rates and £2,000+ on‑call rota expenses and reimbursements.
