About the Role
We are seeking a committed, resilient and highly organised Exclusion Unit Officer to join our dedicated pastoral team at a thriving secondary school in Newham. This key role supports our behaviour systems and ensures that students are held accountable while receiving appropriate support to improve their conduct and engagement with learning. The successful candidate will manage the school’s Exclusion Unit, supervise and support students removed from lessons due to behavioural issues, provide active on‑call support, respond to incidents across the school and support staff in maintaining a calm, safe and purposeful learning environment.
Exclusion Unit Management
- Supervise students placed in the Exclusion Unit due to behavioural incidents.
- Ensure students complete set work and remain focused throughout the school day.
- Maintain accurate records of attendance, behaviour and outcomes.
- Support students in reflecting on their behaviour and developing positive strategies for improvement.
- Liaise with teaching staff, pastoral leaders and senior leaders regarding student progress and reintegration into lessons.
On‑Call Behaviour Support
- Respond promptly to on‑call requests from teaching staff.
- Patrol and monitor the school site throughout the day, maintaining a visible presence.
- Remove students from lessons when required and escort them safely to the Exclusion Unit.
- De‑escalate challenging situations and support students in regulating their behaviour.
- Work closely with the Behaviour Team and Senior Leadership Team to uphold the school’s behaviour expectations.
About You
- Experience working with young people, preferably within a school, alternative provision or youth work setting.
- Confident in managing challenging behaviour in a calm and professional manner.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Resilient, proactive and able to work effectively under pressure.
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
