We are seeking an experienced and passionate Head Gardener to lead the care, maintenance, and continued development of the gardens and grounds across our prestigious luxury hotel estate.
This is an exciting opportunity for a knowledgeable horticultural professional to take ownership of stunning landscaped gardens, productive growing spaces, and estate grounds, ensuring they consistently reflect the exceptional standards our guests expect. Working across several properties within our hotel group, you will lead and inspire a team of gardeners while helping to create beautiful outdoor spaces that enhance the guest experience throughout the year.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the maintenance and presentation of gardens, grounds, and landscaped areas across multiple luxury hotel properties.
- Oversee the management of the walled garden, polytunnels, kitchen gardens, orchards, and ornamental planting.
- Plan and deliver seasonal planting schemes to ensure exceptional year‑round displays.
- Manage, motivate, train, and develop a team of gardeners, setting priorities and maintaining the highest standards.
- Produce high‑quality fruit, vegetables, herbs, and cut flowers for use within the hotel’s restaurants, bars, and events where appropriate.
- Develop sustainable gardening practices, biodiversity initiatives, and environmentally responsible estate management.
- Monitor plant health, implementing effective pest and disease control programmes.
- Maintain lawns, borders, hedges, trees, water features, pathways, and outdoor guest spaces to an impeccable standard.
- Oversee the maintenance and safe operation of horticultural machinery, vehicles, irrigation systems, and equipment.
- Manage budgets, procurement, stock control, and supplier relationships.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety legislation and industry best practice.
- Work collaboratively with Managing Director, Executive Chef, and the wider leadership team to support guest experiences and estate development projects.
About You
You are an experienced horticultural professional with a genuine passion for creating exceptional gardens and outdoor spaces. You enjoy leading teams, developing people, and taking pride in delivering consistently outstanding standards.
You will have:
- Proven experience in a Head Gardener or Senior Gardener role.
- Experience managing formal gardens, estate grounds, walled gardens, and productive growing areas.
- Strong leadership and people management skills.
- Excellent horticultural knowledge, including seasonal planting, pruning, propagation, and plant health.
- Experience managing budgets and planning horticultural projects.
- A proactive, organised, and hands‑on approach.
- A full UK driving licence and the flexibility to travel between our properties.
Desirable Qualifications
- RHS, NVQ, or equivalent horticultural qualification.
- PA1/PA6 certificates or other relevant horticultural qualifications.
- Chainsaw and other land‑based machinery certifications.
