Role Overview

Prison officers protect the public and help make an impact on prisoners’ lives. You will work in a dynamic environment as a peacekeeper, counsellor, or teacher, building constructive relationships with offenders and supporting your colleagues as one team.

Responsibilities

  • Work a variety of shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays.
  • Carry out duties that may involve maintaining order, supporting learning and welfare activities, and managing incidents.
  • Communicate and influence with prisoners, staff and outside agencies to promote safety and well‑being.
  • Take part in training and professional development programmes.
  • Adhere to prison policies and procedures and maintain a high standard of service delivery.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have the legal right to live and work in the United Kingdom.
  • Pass a medical and fitness assessment, an eyesight test (both with and without corrective lenses) and a hearing assessment.
  • Meet the Nationality and security requirements for high‑security prisons (categoryA). For categoryA, you must have lived in the UK for the last three years.
  • Show strong communication, influencing, commitment to quality, effective decision‑making and caring skills.
  • Exhibit resilience, self‑confidence and the ability to build positive relationships with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Deliver spoken English fluently; Welsh may be required in Wales.

Working Hours & Salary

  • Initial training: 37hours a week.
  • Post‑training options: 37, 39 or 41hours a week.
  • Salary:
    • £34,928 per year for 37hours
    • £36,816 per year for 39hours
    • £39,334 per year for 41hours
  • 24/7 coverage means shifts include evenings, some nights, weekends and public holidays (added to holiday allowance).
