Job description Temporary Assistant Scientific Officer for 12 weeks ( x 8 staff)Location: Newforge Lane OR Bushmills Hours: Full-time, 37 hours per week Pay Rate: £ per hourAbout the RoleThe Fisheries and Aquatic Ecosystems Branch (FAEB) of AFBI carries out research, monitoring, and technology transfer activities to support the sustainable management of fisheries and aquatic resources throughout Northern Ireland.We are seeking motivated and reliable Fisheries Field Assistants to support a range of scientific surveys and research projects. This is a hands-on role suited to individuals who enjoy working outdoors and are comfortable working in varied weather conditions and aquatic environments.Key ResponsibilitiesAssist with surveys of fish populations in rivers, lakes, and freshwater systems.Participate in electric fishing surveys and fish population monitoring activities.Support lake fish surveys using coarse fish netting, gill nets, and fyke nets.Collect, record, and accurately enter scientific data into electronic systems.Assist with laboratory analysis of fish samples and biological data.Work from small boats on freshwater environments as required.Carry out general laboratory, office, and field duties as directed by supervisors.Adhere to health and safety procedures at all times.Essential CriteriaApplicants must have:GCSE/GCE O-Level (or equivalent) Grade C or above in both English and Mathematics.A minimum of 6 months’ experience in aquatic science, environmental monitoring, field data collection, or a related scientific field.Demonstrable ability to work outdoors in challenging environmental conditions.A full driving licence that enables them to undertake the duties of the post.The fitness, ability, and willingness to undertake fieldwork involving wading in rivers, working on riverbanks, and operating from small boats.Successful applicants may be required to undergo a medical assessment to meet the health and safety requirements associated with electrofishing activities.Desirable CriteriaThe following experience and qualifications would be advantageous:Experience of electrofishing techniques.Previous experience working in a fisheries, environmental, or ecological field role.Knowledge of scientific field and laboratory methods.First Aid certification or relevant safety training.Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and data management.Experience working on or near water.Previous employment or placement experience with AFBI.This is an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience within a leading scientific organisation and contribute to important environmental research and conservation projects across Northern Ireland….
