Respiratory Nursing – Clinical Nurse Specialist. Requires a high degree of professional autonomy and clinical judgement to manage patients with asthma and COPD across the Trust.
Role includes assessment of emergency department and inpatient cases, initiation of home oxygen therapy, performing and interpreting diagnostic tests (spirometry, bronchodilator challenge, FeNO, capillary blood gases), participation in MDTs, contributing to the National Asthma and COPD Audit Programme, and educating other healthcare professionals.
Main duties of the job
- Co‑ordinate specialty care within the Trust, including community clinics and home visits for patients unable to attend clinics.
- Support patients with oxygen therapy by checking ongoing needs, ensuring safety and identifying risk.
- Serve as a key member and point of contact for the multidisciplinary team and for patients and carers.
- Carry out diagnostic and therapeutic interventions independently, write reports, and commence further treatment based on findings, including spirometry, FeNO, lung function reports and blood gas analysis.
- Perform complex therapeutic and investigative procedures under indirect supervision of the Consultant, ensuring safe practice and adherence to agreed guidelines.

- Carry out diagnostic and therapeutic interventions independently, interpret reports, and commence treatment, including spirometry, FeNO, lung function reports and blood gas analysis.
- Perform independent clinics for patients with asthma and COPD and support primary care in managing community patients.
- Assess patients on wards to initiate home oxygen therapy and review them at home.
- Refer patients with severe asthma to tertiary institutions for biologics.
- Liaise with other hospitals regarding management of NIV and follow patients up at home.
- Perform research and audits regularly.
- Support lung nodule and cystic fibrosis patients.

Qualifications
- Knowledge of respiratory conditions, management and treatment.
- Teaching and assessing qualification.
- Relevant specialist course in Asthma and COPD.
- Advanced Physical Assessment Module.
Experience
- Minimum 2 years experience in a senior nursing role – Band 6 and above.
- Experience working with patients with chronic respiratory diseases.
- Ability to prioritise and organise workload.
- Ability to work autonomously and as a member of a multi‑professional team.
- Experience in patient advocacy.
- Experience reviewing inpatients referred for COPD/asthma optimisation.
- Experience performing outpatient clinic reviews for asthma and COPD patients.
- Ability to perform and interpret capillary blood gases.
Knowledge
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Knowledge and understanding of relevant local and national guidance.
- Evidence of continued professional development.
- Knowledge of respiratory anatomy and physiology.
- Knowledge of respiratory conditions including Cystic Fibrosis, Asthma, COPD, Lung Cancer.
- Understanding of the Rapid Respiratory pathway.
- Knowledge of research and audit.
- Understanding of spirometry as a diagnostic tool.
