Overview

Applications are invited for a part‑time Fly Laboratory Technician position in the Fly Facility at the Department of Genetics. The technician will play an important role in the delivery of the facility’s services and the general operation of the facility.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain fly stocks as part of the facility’s stock‑keeping service.
  • Contribute to the daily running of the facility and provide support during staff absence or periods of increased demand.
  • Assist with the fly food service, provide support for the microinjection service, and prepare materials for Drosophila teaching.

Qualifications

  • Educated to GCSE level grade A‑C / NVQ level 2 in a science subject, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience in an academic or commercial laboratory.
  • Basic IT skills and good communication, interpersonal and organisational skills.
  • A methodical approach to problem solving.
  • Previous experience with Drosophila is desirable but not essential.

Benefits and Working Conditions

Part‑time (18.25 hours per week, 0.5 FTE), Monday to Friday. Fixed term for an initial period of 12 months. Flexible working arrangements are welcomed; exact pattern and times will be agreed with the successful candidate.
