Job Description:

As a key member of the Road Safety Engineering team within Essex Highways, the role involves contributing to the successful delivery of essential services, including Road Safety Audits, the Annual Collision Investigation Program, and Fatal Road Death investigations. This dynamic, fast‑paced position requires an individual who thrives in a high‑pressure environment, is highly motivated, and is capable of managing a diverse range of tasks simultaneously. The work carried out will directly support our commitment to achieving the Vision Zero target – eliminating all deaths and serious injuries on roads in Essex by 2040.

Responsibilities

  • Undertake Road Safety Audits and assessments on behalf of the Highway Authority.
  • Identify collision trends at locations and put forward Safety Engineering solutions.
  • Undertake Fatal Road Collision Investigations on behalf of the Highway Authority.
  • Carry out ad‑hoc collision investigations.
  • Attend meetings to provide Road Safety support and technical input as appropriate.
  • Provide timely and accurate advice to colleagues, Councillors, and the general public on all highway‑related safety matters.
  • Assist in developing new team policies and procedural documents.
  • Assist the Team Leader and Senior Engineer with the presentation of reports to Highways Panels, County and District Council committees.
  • Serve as the technical expert in collision analysis and a safety audit team leader, promoting good practice throughout the organisation.
  • Perform other ad‑hoc duties as required to fulfil the role.

Qualifications

  • Degree, or equivalent high‑level qualification, or significant experience in highways (Essential).
  • Knowledge of relevant Highway Design procedures and standards (Essential).
  • Road Safety Engineering / Collision Investigation experience (Essential).
  • Proficiency with Microsoft applications (Essential).
  • Experience of undertaking Road Safety Audits (Desirable).
  • Evidence of at least 2 days of relevant continuous professional development in Road Safety Audit, Road Safety Engineering or Collision Investigation in the last 12 months (Desirable).
  • Attendance at a UK accredited 10‑day Collision Investigation / Road Safety Engineering training course or qualification as a safety audit team leader to GG119 (Desirable).
