Salary
£36,816 per annum for a 39‑hour week (including 20% unsocial). Salary reflects weekly hours.
Working Hours & Shift Patterns
Prison officers work a 39‑hour week (minimum 37 hours). Working hours may be 37, 39 or 41 days per week, with the routine 39‑hour pattern being typical. Shifts include evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays. Shift start and finish times are fixed; applicants are responsible for timely arrival.

Qualifications & Requirements
- Minimum age 18 years at commencement of employment
- Meet Civil Service nationality requirements
- Pass a medical and fitness assessment (eyesight, hearing and basic health screening)
- Meet the required eyesight standard in both eyes, with and without corrective lenses
- Meet a suitable hearing standard without hearing aids
- Tattoos permitted provided they are not offensive, violent, discriminatory or intimidating; facial tattoos generally not acceptable unless for cultural, religious or medical reasons
- For category A high‑security prisons, residency in the UK for the preceding 3 years is required
Assessment Process
After initial application, successful candidates complete two online tests: a basic judgement and numerical skills test followed by a values‑based assessment. Successful completion leads to an online assessment centre (OAC) where practical behaviours, strengths and staff values are evaluated. Applicants are added to a merit list and may remain on it for 12 months.
Unsuccessful applicants experience a six‑month waiting period before re‑applying.
Medical & Fitness
- Medical and fitness test covering eyesight, hearing and blood pressure is required once a vacancy is identified
- Testing must take place at a UK‑based medical centre
