Overview
As an Assistant Ranger apprentice, you’ll work with the ranger team to deliver conservation and climate change strategies at the Stackpole Estate, a Grade 1 listed historic landscape in South Pembrokeshire. The role runs for 18 months, beginning September 2026, and culminates in a Level 2 Countryside Worker Apprenticeship.

What You’ll Be Doing
Your tasks will include woodland management, coastal and freshwater habitat care, and improving tenanted farms for nature. You will also maintain public access sections such as the Wales coast path, the Bosherston Lily Ponds, and nearby beaches. Work will take you to sites across South Pembrokeshire, including Freshwater West, Gupton Farm, Lydstep headland and Lawrenny Woodlands.
You will develop the skills and knowledge required for the Countryside Worker Level 2 apprenticeship through a combination of mandatory week‑long college blocks, online learning, and on‑the‑job training.
Training & Development
All expenses and travel for learning are covered. There may be opportunities to visit other National Trust locations and attend additional training events. Regular review meetings with your training provider will assess your progression.
Eligibility Criteria
- A minimum of 2 GCSEs, including English and maths at grade E/2, or Functional Skills Level 1 equivalent.
- 2 GCSEs (or first‐language Welsh at grade E or above).
- Age 16 or over and completion of Year 11.
- Not in full‑time education.
- Right to work in the UK for the duration of the contract and previously ordinarily resident in the UK for the past three consecutive years.
- No other training or education programme (e.g., another apprenticeship or a degree) at the time of enrolment.
- Ability to travel to the work location.
- If aged 18 or under at enrolment and English or maths not at grade C/4, functional skills Level 2 will be enrolled as part of the apprenticeship.
- Previous qualification or extensive relevant work experience may make you ineligible.
