Senior Technical Designer – Bristol (On-site)
An established and highly unique creative design & build studio is seeking an experienced Senior Technical Designer to join its team in Bristol. Working across an incredible portfolio of immersive and experiential scenic projects, this role offers the opportunity to contribute to the delivery of detailed and bespoke scenery and set pieces from concept through to manufacture.
The successful candidate will play a key role in translating great ideas into technically viable, buildable solutions, collaborating closely with project, design and workshop teams.
Key Skills & Experience
- Minimum 6+ years’ experience within technical design, ideally in sectors such as theatre, set design, one-off commissioned pieces, exhibitions, or experiential environments
- Proven experience turning creative concepts into practical, buildable outcomes
- Strong understanding of materials, fabrication methods and manufacturing processes. Able to creatively use different materials to deliver the creative concept
- Experience producing detailed manufacturing drawings and technical documentation
- Knowledge of processes such as joinery, CNC, metal fabrication, machining, laser cutting, GRP and/or additive manufacturing
- Strong problem-solving skills with a practical, solutions-focused approach
- Comfortable working independently and collaborating with internal teams, suppliers and external stakeholders
- Understanding of construction methodologies and workshop/manufacturing environments
- Awareness of electromechanical principles would be advantageous
- Proficiency in 2D and 3D CAD software (SolidWorks, Rhino, AutoCAD or similar)
- Competent with Microsoft Office tools; experience with Adobe Creative Suite or similar would be beneficial
Responsibilities
- Develop and resolve technical designs from initial concepts and sketches
- Produce accurate 2D technical drawings and 3D CAD models for manufacture
- Work closely with production and project teams to ensure designs meet programme, budget and quality requirements
- Liaise with specialist suppliers where required
- Support material selection, component sourcing and technical development
- Produce supporting documentation including bills of materials and technical information
- Ensure designs align with relevant health and safety requirements and industry standards
- Support project delivery throughout design, manufacture and installation phases
Package
- Permanent, full-time position (40 hours per week)
- Salary from £39,000+
- Bristol-based role (fully on-site)
