 nData Center Technician

Onsite in Client’s Data Centre (West London area) Working Hours: 0800 to 1600 Monday to Friday (with on-call availability for 24/7 support) Security Clearance: UK nationals only for SC clearance (British passport, no dual nationality, 5 years continuous UK residency)

Primary Objective

n

Leads and manages the data centre operations team, ensuring 24/7 reliability, security, and performance of physical and virtual infrastructure. Combines hands-on technical expertise with people leadership, operational planning, and stakeholder management. Acts as the primary point of accountability for all data centre operations, maintenance, and incident response activities.

Key Responsibilities nLeadership & Team Management

    n

  • nManage, mentor, and develop a team of data centre technicians, including performance reviews, shift scheduling, and skills developmentn
  • n

  • nSet team objectives and KPIs aligned with client SLAs and operational targetsn
  • n

  • nConduct regular one-to-ones, team meetings, and performance appraisalsn
  • n

  • nManage on-call rotas and ensure adequate coverage for 24/7 support requirementsn

  • nFoster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and safetyn

Infrastructure Management

n

    n

  • nOversee the installation, configuration, and maintenance of servers, networking devices, and storage equipmentn
  • n

  • nEnsure all hardware deployments follow documented procedures and change management processesn

  • nManage structured cabling infrastructure to maintain standards and support scalabilityn

System Monitoring & Environmental Controls

n

    n

  • nOversee monitoring of environmental controls (HVAC, temperature, humidity) and power systems (generators, UPS) to ensure optimal operating conditionsn
  • n

  • nEnsure proactive alerting and response procedures are in place for environmental anomaliesn
  • n

  • nManage capacity planning for power, cooling, and physical spacen

Incident Response & Troubleshooting

n

    n

  • nAct as escalation point for critical infrastructure incidentsn
  • n

  • nEnsure the team operates as effective first responders to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve hardware and network issuesn
  • n

  • nLead post-incident reviews and ensure root cause analysis is completed and actions implementedn

Maintenance & Security

n

    n

  • nPlan and schedule routine and preventive maintenance on all infrastructuren
  • n

  • nEnsure adherence to physical security protocols, access control procedures, and data centre standardsn
  • n

  • nCoordinate planned maintenance windows with the client and internal teamsn

Stakeholder & Vendor Management

n

    n

  • nAct as primary point of contact for client data centre operationsn
  • n

  • nAttend and contribute to service review meetings, providing operational reporting and insightsn
  • n

  • nCoordinate with third-party suppliers for equipment procurement, maintenance contracts, and SLA adherencen
  • n

  • nManage vendor relationships and hold suppliers accountable to agreed service levelsn

Operational Planning & Budget

  • nManage operational budgets for equipment, maintenance, and consumablesn
  • n

  • nConduct capacity planning and provide recommendations for infrastructure investmentn

  • nDevelop and maintain forward schedules of change and maintenance plansn

Documentation, Reporting & Governance

    n

  • nMaintain accurate documentation including inventory records, change management logs, and incident reportsn
  • n

  • nProduce regular operational reports covering uptime, incidents, capacity, and SLA performancen
  • n

  • nEnsure compliance with data centre standards (e.g., Uptime Institute Tier classifications), health & safety regulations, and audit requirementsn

Continuous Improvement

  • nIdentify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency, reduce downtime, and improve service deliveryn

  • nDrive adoption of best practices across the teamn

  • nContribute to the development of operational procedures, runbooks, and standard operating proceduresn

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • nProven experience managing 24/7 operational environments with on-call responsibilitiesn

Technical Knowledge

  • nDeep understanding of servers, structured cabling, and network infrastructuren

  • nStrong knowledge of data centre environmental systems (power distribution, cooling/HVAC, UPS, generators)n
  • n

  • nExperience with data centre monitoring tools and DCIM platformsn
  • n

  • nUnderstanding of virtualisation technologies (VMware, Hyper-V)n

  • nKnowledge of change management, incident management, and ITIL processesn
