ELFT is seeking a Locum Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist for a 10‑week fixed term post with the South Bedfordshire Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service.

Job Overview

The post is based in the Emotional and Behavioural team at Charter House Luton CAMHS, providing psychiatric assessment and treatment for young people up to 18 years and support to families and carers.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct psychiatric assessment and provide treatment where appropriate.
  • Contribute a psychiatric perspective and senior clinical leadership to the multidisciplinary team.
  • Offer consultation to other professionals and agencies.
  • Facilitate the development of the team and wider service.
  • Collaborate with local managers and professional colleagues to run the service efficiently.
  • Adhere to East London Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service policies and Trust policies.

Person Specification

Education

  • Full GMC registration.
  • MRCPsych Part 1 & 2 or equivalent.
  • Eligibility for inclusion on the Specialist Register or CCT in the appropriate specialty (or within 6 months); Section 12 approved and Approved Clinician status or willingness to apply for approval.
  • Higher academic degree (desirable).

Experience

  • Extensive clinical knowledge and excellent clinical skills.
  • Experience of assessment and management of CYP with complex mental health disorders.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Active pursuit of continued professional development.
  • Sound professional judgement, clinical risk management and holistic patient perspective.
  • Creative design and implementation of evidence‑based treatment programmes.
  • Awareness of transcultural and gender issues in psychiatry.
  • Balance competing demands and prioritise effectively.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

  • Strong leadership and team coordination skills.
  • Excellent communication with patients, families, colleagues and other professionals.
  • Ability to build effective relationships under pressure and adapt to change.
  • Enthusiasm and initiative in pursuing innovation and high standards.

Teaching

  • Experience of teaching in small groups and lecturing.
  • Commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, academic and clinical.

Management / Audit

  • Enthusiastic and organised approach to audit and quality assurance.
  • Ability to operate effectively in a committee.

Research

  • Experience in a research project.
  • Publication accepted by peer‑review journal in a relevant academic field (desirable).

Travel Requirements

  • Ability to travel to community venues including patients’ homes (essential).
  • Valid driving licence (desirable).

  • Meet professional health requirements.
  • Adherence to the highest ethical and professional standards.
