Overview

Location: London, London (region), TW9 4DU. This role is part of the Technology Strategy team at The National Archives.

We are looking for a Cyber Security Officer to shape and strengthen our security posture, maintain accreditation, and embed best practice across the organisation. The position is key to protecting our digital assets, information systems, and cloud environments from evolving cyber threats.

Responsibilities

You will act as a subject matter expert on vulnerability management, identifying weaknesses across networks, platforms, and hardware, and guiding remediation.

You will oversee compliance with key security frameworks including ISO27001, Cyber Essentials Plus, GovAssure, and emerging ISO/IEC 42001 and 42005 standards for AI governance.

Your role involves developing and maintaining incident response plans, monitoring compliance alerts from our ERP Smart Audit, and coordinating with external assessors and auditors to meet industry and government standards.

You will collaborate with colleagues across the organisation to embed strong security practices into everyday operations, raise awareness, and build capability through training and guidance on cybersecurity and safe digital practices.

Reporting to the IT Security and Information Assurance manager, you will own the delivery of accreditation, cybersecurity awareness, and security policy implementation.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Strong knowledge and understanding of cyber security frameworks and standards, including good cyber practices in the UK Government/Public sector.
  • Demonstrable experience working in a cyber security role, preferably within a government or large organisation.
  • Ability to work under pressure, prioritise and manage workload.
  • Excellent problem‑solving skills for routine and complex problems, with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to deliver training to a wide audience.
  • Experience with incident and problem management, leading or implementing infrastructure change, and improving reliability, performance, or security.
  • Experience with infrastructure operations, support or delivery across cloud, networking, Microsoft platforms, and enterprise systems.
  • Experience supporting environments of significant scale and complexity.

Professional Requirements

SC clearance or willingness to obtain SC clearance is required. Applicants must have been resident in the UK for at least the past three years.

A combination of onsite and home working is available. Applicants should be willing to travel to the Kew site for a minimum of 60% of their work time.
