Apply for the Javascript Developer (Back end focused)
Location: Manchester
Job Description:

I’m working with a fast-growing online retail / eCommerce brand looking to hire a back end focused Full Stack Developer into its in-house technology team.

This role would suit a developer with a strong backend bias who enjoys working across systems, integrations and data, while still being happy to support broader full stack development where needed.

The business operates in a high-volume eCommerce environment, so this is less about building isolated features and more about developing the backend services, integrations and internal systems that keep a complex retail operation moving. Think eCommerce platforms, operational tooling, third-party integrations, data flows and automation across the wider business.

The role

You’ll be joining a growing tech team and will play a key role in building and maintaining the systems that sit behind a modern eCommerce operation.

Key areas of focus include:

  • Designing, building and maintaining scalable backend services and integrations supporting eCommerce platforms and internal systems
  • Developing APIs and services using technologies such as Node.js to support data flow between internal tools, third-party platforms and customer-facing applications
  • Owning integrations from planning through to development, deployment and ongoing maintenance
  • Contributing to backend architecture with a focus on reliability, scalability and performance
  • Building and maintaining serverless functions / microservices and identifying opportunities for automation and process improvement
  • Supporting data pipelines, operational reporting and analytics workflows across the wider platform estate
  • Working across databases and data platforms, helping to optimise data models and query performance
  • Collaborating closely with technology, eCommerce, content and design teams to deliver reliable systems and features across the business
  • Supporting front-end / platform changes where required, particularly within an eCommerce environment

What they’re looking for

The ideal background will include:

  • Around 3+ years’ experience in a backend or full stack engineering role
  • Strong commercial experience with Node.js or similar backend technologies in production environments
  • Experience designing and building APIs and integrating with third-party systems
  • Exposure to serverless architectures such as AWS Lambda or similar
  • Experience working with databases / data platforms such as MongoDB, PostgreSQL, BigQuery or similar
  • Familiarity with CI/CD, Git and modern development workflows
  • Experience building or contributing to system integrations, backend services and data pipelines
  • A practical, hands-on approach and the ability to work in a fast-moving commercial environment

Nice to have

Any of the below would be beneficial, but they are not essential:

  • Experience with Shopify integrations or Shopify / eCommerce platform work
  • Exposure to React or other modern front-end frameworks
  • Experience with internal tooling platforms such as Retool
  • Knowledge of warehouse, courier, fulfilment or order management systems
  • Previous experience in retail, eCommerce or other high-traffic digital environments

Package

  • 5% – 10% bonus
  • Additional day off for your birthday
  • Flexible working around core hours
  • Enhanced pension contribution
  • Enhanced maternity and sick pay
  • Free onsite gym
  • Hybrid working with 4 days onsite

If you’re a backend-leaning full stack engineer who enjoys working on integrations, internal systems, data flows and the operational engine behind a growing eCommerce business, I’d be happy to talk you through the role.
