Location: Hybrid – a blend of home working and office based, 60/40 split (Hessle, HU13 0DH)

Role Overview
Parallel is a fast‑paced scale up with the backing of parent company Sewell Group. The business supports public sector clients across the UK to make decisions about their services, estates and budgets through the delivery of market‑leading web applications and data visualisation tools, including Strata.
To support growing client demands and an expanding product range, Parallel is looking to grow its software engineering team and take the business to the next level.
The Software Engineer will work alongside the Head of Software and the wider development team to deliver a series of software and data projects, to help modernise existing technology platforms and develop new products for new markets.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, build, and integrate AI‑powered features into our products, including LLM integrations, retrieval pipelines, and agentic workflows.
- Build responsive, accessible, user‑friendly interfaces using Vue 3 with TypeScript, integrating with backend APIs and modern frontend tooling.
- Use AI coding agents and developer tooling effectively to accelerate delivery, while maintaining a high bar for code quality, review, and security.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to gather requirements and translate them into technical specifications and solutions.
- Develop backend services and APIs using .NET (C#), ensuring scalability, performance, and security.
- Integrate front‑end and back‑end components using RESTful APIs and modern JavaScript frameworks (e.g., Vue with TypeScript).
- Model and manage data across MS SQL, Postgres.
- Write and maintain unit and integration tests for both front‑end and back‑end components to ensure code quality.
- Participate in Agile development practices including sprint planning, daily stand‑ups, and retrospectives.
- Ensure adherence to data protection, security standards, and confidentiality requirements in all development activities.
Essential
- A minimum of 2 years’ commercial experience in full stack software development.
- Hands‑on experience building and running applications on Microsoft Azure or AWS.
- Practical experience using AI coding agents and assistants (e.g. Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot) as part of day‑to‑day development.
- Solid grounding in software engineering fundamentals: OO design, clean code, version control with Git, and code review.
- Solid experience building backend services with .NET.
- Strong front‑end development skills with modern JavaScript frameworks (e.g. Vue typescript, Angular, React).
- Strong experience with relational databases (e.g. MS SQL, Postgres SQL) and exposure to NoSQL stores (e.g. Cosmos DB, MongoDB).
- Good working knowledge of ORM (e.g. Entity Framework, Dapper) with database (e.g. MS SQL, Postgres).
- Experience working with RESTful APIs and integrating front‑end and back‑end components.
- Proficient in use of HTML5, CSS/SCSS, and modern JavaScript/TypeScript standards.
- Experience writing and maintaining unit tests for backend and frontend.
- Passion for technology, ongoing learning and client satisfaction.
- Awareness of the importance of security, data protection and confidentiality.
- Have good attention to detail and a high level of accuracy.
Desirable
- Experience in data manipulation and analysis.
- Experience of geo‑mapping formats, approaches or tools.
- Experience with vector databases, embeddings, or building Retrieval‑Augmented Generation (RAG) systems.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code (e.g. Bicep, Terraform), or containerisation (Docker).
- Experience building agentic workflows or working with the Model Context Protocol (MCP), tool use, or function calling.
- Experience integrating LLMs or AI APIs into applications (e.g. OpenAI, Anthropic, Azure OpenAI) – including prompt design and structured outputs.
- Possess a positive approach to problem solving, with a process driven method to approach design solutions and a keen eye for user experience.
