Apply for the IT Security Engineer 36,621 pa
Location: Swindon
Job Description:

We’re looking for an IT Security Engineer to join our Security Operations team. You’ll help protect the systems, services and information that support the National Trust and the millions of people who engage with us every year. Working alongside experienced security professionals, you’ll play a key role in maintaining the confidentiality, integrity and availability of our digital services, helping to identify and respond to security threats, investigate incidents and strengthen our overall security posture. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys problem‑solving, continuous learning and working in a collaborative environment where their expertise can make a meaningful impact.

What it’s like to work here

You’ll be joining a collaborative and supportive Technology team based at Heelis, the National Trust’s award‑winning central office in Swindon. Home to around 500 colleagues from across the organisation, Heelis is a unique and sustainable workplace, designed using materials sourced from National Trust land and recognised nationally for its environmental credentials. Within Security Operations, you’ll work closely with Information Security, Infrastructure, Networks, Service Management and specialist technology partners, helping to protect critical services and support the delivery of secure, resilient technology across the Trust. Whether you’re investigating incidents, implementing new security solutions or contributing to continuous improvement initiatives, you’ll be encouraged to share ideas, build your expertise and develop your career in an environment that values collaboration and learning.

Your contractual location will be our head office in Swindon and there will be an expectation for you to attend the office. However, there is flexibility on where you are based at other times. You will be required to work at a National Trust location for 40‑60% of your working week. This will be discussed in more detail at interview.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll help ensure the National Trust operates in a safe and secure way by monitoring security systems, investigating alerts and responding to security incidents. Working with colleagues across Technology, Information Security and strategic suppliers, you’ll identify and communicate risks, support remediation activities and help maintain effective security controls and standards.

You’ll play a key part in investigating security incidents escalated through our Security Operations processes, analysing activity within our SIEM platform and using security data from across the technology estate to identify unusual behaviour and potential threats. You’ll also contribute to technical design and implementation activities, supporting the delivery of approved security solutions into operational environments. Alongside day‑to‑day operational responsibilities, you’ll support continuous improvement initiatives, assist with security reporting and share knowledge with colleagues to strengthen capability across the wider team.

Who we’re looking for

  • Previous experience working within a well‑established Security Operations Centre (SOC) or Security Incident team, working in a 1st/2nd line environment.
  • Experience investigating suspicious and anomalous activity, making recommendations for remediation and future monitoring.
  • Exposure to incident management, from discovery through to mitigation, covering internal and external threats and non‑compliance issues.
  • Experience contributing to recommendations for security tool configuration, monitoring, policies and processes.
  • Good knowledge of one or more operating systems, including Windows, macOS or Linux, with familiarity of scripting languages such as Python, Perl or Bash.
  • Knowledge of enterprise security tools and technologies, combined with a self‑motivated approach and a strong willingness to learn in a hands‑on environment.

The package

  • Substantial pension scheme of up to 10% basic salary
  • Free entry to National Trust places for you, a guest and your children (under 18)
  • Season ticket loan
  • EV car lease scheme (for roles that meet the salary criteria)
  • Perks at work discounts such as gym memberships, shopping discount codes, cinema discounts
  • Holiday allowance up to 32 days relating to length of service, plus holiday purchase scheme, subject to meeting minimum criteria.
