Role Summary

The engineer ensures dnata Catering’s fleet remains safe, legally compliant, and operationally available to support 24/7 catering operations. Combining engineering expertise, supplier management, and compliance oversight, the role maximises fleet reliability, minimises downtime, and upholds safety, quality, and customer service standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure fleet compliance with legal, regulatory, and company requirements via accurate maintenance schedules, documentation, and statutory records.
  • Maximise fleet availability by proactively managing Vehicle Off Road (VOR) levels, coordinating maintenance activities, and ensuring sufficient vehicle availability.
  • Monitor and maintain MOT compliance, achieving first‑time pass rate targets.
  • Serve as technical subject‑matter expert, providing engineering advice and guidance to operational teams.
  • Undertake minor vehicle repairs and maintenance to reduce downtime and support continuity.
  • Manage performance of external maintenance providers, ensuring SLAs, cost control, and minimal downtime.
  • Monitor supplier performance through audits, meetings, and reporting, driving continuous service improvement.
  • Conduct regular audits of fleet compliance, vehicle inspections, driver checks, and engineering processes.
  • Investigate vehicle defects, breakdowns, delays, and recurring failures, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions.
  • Review and challenge engineering and maintenance expenditure, seeking cost efficiency without compromising safety.
  • Produce and analyse fleet performance data and reports (VOR, MOT, compliance, supplier performance, costs) to recommend improvements.
  • Organise, coordinate, and lead regular engineering, supplier, and operational review meetings, building relationships with stakeholders.
  • Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance reliability, processes, and efficiency.
  • Ensure all engineering activities comply with Health & Safety policies and relevant legislation.

Skills, Knowledge, and Expertise

  • Previous experience working in GSE/LGV/HGV/PSV/Plant workshop environment.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Clean driving licence (max 6 points).
  • Extensive knowledge of the HGV Inspection Manual and DVSA/O licence legal obligations.
  • Decision‑making confidence.
  • Ability to work effectively in fast‑paced, demanding situations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to build relationships with stakeholders and decision makers.
  • Objective decision making aligned with business needs.
  • Strong negotiation skills and influence ability.
  • Commitment to industry, with up‑to‑date knowledge of HGV technology.
  • HGV licence (or willingness to obtain through dcuk).
  • Accurate reporting of work carried out.
  • Recognised LGV/HGV/Mechanical or Electrical qualification (Level 3).
  • Flexibility of working hours.
  • Willingness to be on an on‑call rota (1 in 8 weeks).
  • Experience or knowledge of aviation.
  • IRTEC qualification.
  • IOSH/NEBOSH training.
  • Hydraulic experience.
  • Roadside breakdown experience.
