This Mechanical Design Engineer role is focused on leading and delivering mechanical design and development activities for Optronics & Missile Electronics (OME), ensuring work is completed in line with project plans and delivered to cost, schedule and quality standards. The role covers the full mechanical design lifecycle, including concept development, detailed mechanical and assembly drawings, CAD and configuration management, design due diligence, prototyping of intricate or high‑risk elements, technical reviews and stakeholder engagement. The position requires strong collaboration across engineering disciplines, Design Authorities, Supply Chain and Manufacturing teams, with effective communication of progress, risks and issues to Project Management, supported by robust engineering change management and validation through calculation and/or FEA.
Your Profile
- Lead and complete mechanical design and development tasks in line with project plans, ensuring delivery to cost, schedule, and quality standards.
- Experience of mechanical design throughout the design lifecycle.
- Develop robust concepts, generate detailed mechanical and assembly drawings (preferably using PTC Windchill and CREO), and ensure adequate engineering due diligence as designs mature.
- Prototype intricate or high‑risk design elements to verify compliance.
- Prepare and participate in internal technical reviews, securing stakeholder buy‑in for design decisions.
- Deliver accurate, independently reviewed data packs within CAD and configuration management systems.
- Communicate progress, risks, and issues effectively to Project Management.
- Work collaboratively across engineering disciplines as well as with Design Authorities, Supply Chain, and Manufacturing teams.
Desired Skills
- Strong background in mechanical design engineering, with a proven track record in delivering creative solutions.
- Proficiency in producing, developing, and controlling detail and assembly drawings; experience with PTC Windchill and PTC CREO.
- Solid understanding of geometric tolerancing, surface finishes/treatments, and tolerance analysis (BS 8888 essential).
- Practical experience with design validation through calculation and/or FEA (Finite Element Analysis).
- Skilled in precision mechanical design and assembly, with hands‑on manufacturing or assembly experience.
- Demonstrated project delivery to time and budget, and experience with engineering change management.
- Effective analytical and problem‑solving skills, paired with emotional intelligence and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Familiarity with the end‑to‑end engineering lifecycle.
- Additional expertise in precision components, optics, electronics packaging, servo systems, materials, and thermal management is highly advantageous.
