Lecturer (Assistant Professor) / Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) / Reader (Associate Professor) in Natural Language Processing, Reinforcement Learning or AI Security/Assurance/Verification
The Department of Computer Science wishes to appoint a lecturer or senior lecturer or reader in AI, specifically NLP, RL and/or AI security, assurance or verification, to join our strong and growing Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Research Group.
We are a highly collaborative team, working with researchers across the university and beyond. You will receive support and growth opportunities, including career mentoring, and opportunities to progress, manage and lead. You will help develop collaborations with regional, national and international partners across various sectors, and deepen existing academic collaborations while developing new ones. You are expected to bring a strong academic record and the enthusiasm to create an engaging experience for our students.

About The Role
Research
You will work with colleagues, students and researchers to develop and publish papers, apply for research funding, and make your research available to society by working with industry, developing spin‑outs, collaborating with charities, influencing policymakers, or delivering talks and demonstrations.
Teaching
You will design and deliver teaching materials for lectures, tutorials and labs, educating and inspiring students to deliver an engaging experience and a supportive programme.
Departmental Service
You will take on internal roles such as supporting student placements, ethics processes, recruitment and admissions, or leading a research team.
Support and Growth Opportunities
Training for a Higher Education Academy (HEA) fellowship qualification. New Lecturers will be enrolled into the Pathway to HEA Fellowship and Senior Lecturers can also opt in, which provides skills and support for teaching and can result in FHEA status.
All staff are allocated a mentor on joining and receive day‑to‑day support to progress their careers.

About You
Our ideal candidates will hold a PhD or equivalent in a relevant discipline, along with a first degree or equivalent experience. Membership of a professional body and a higher education teaching qualification (e.g. PGCert, FHEA) are desirable.
- Substantial research experience with an emerging track record for Lecturers and an established research profile with funding success for Senior Lecturers/Readers.
- Deep conceptual understanding of your subject, alongside experience teaching at UG/PG levels.
- Strong written, oral and interpersonal skills, and the ability to form positive collaborations and working relationships.
- A commitment to excellence in research and teaching, student experience, and ethical professional conduct.
- Senior Lecturers and Readers should exhibit academic leadership and a clear research vision.
- Senior Lecturers and Readers must have current knowledge of modern teaching methodologies, learning technologies, and a robust research strategy.
- All roles require excellent organisational and administrative skills.
Appointments and Recruitment
Appointments will be made at Grade 8 for Lecturer positions, and at Grade 9 for Senior Lecturer and Reader positions.
