Band 5 Senior Financial Management Assistant

UHB (University Hospitals Birmingham) NHS Foundation Trust runs Good Hope, Heartlands, Solihull and the world‑renowned Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. The Trust employs 22,000 staff and serves over two million patients annually.

Location: Regent Court, George Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham B15 1NU. The successful candidate will need to travel between sites.

Key responsibilities include explaining financial concepts to non‑finance staff, presenting financial information in an accessible way to aid decision making, and contributing to the Trust’s financial planning and reporting.

Qualifications

  • Five Grade GCSEs at Grade 4 or above (or A to C pre‑2019 grading) including Maths & English.
  • Progression to a CCAB qualification or significant relevant experience.

Experience

  • Experience working in Management Accounts.
  • Good understanding of management accounting concepts and techniques.
  • Experience in the NHS or a large complex organisation, with knowledge of the annual financial cycle from planning through to year‑end forecasting and accounts preparation.
  • Working knowledge or interest in the NHS, including understanding of key targets and the performance management framework.

Additional Criteria

  • Numerate with strong analytical skills.
  • Proficient in spreadsheets, databases and computerised ledger systems, with good keyboard skills.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to explain financial concepts to non‑finance staff.
  • Ability to interpret and present financial information in a meaningful way to aid decision making.
  • Ability to influence or negotiate with operational and clinical staff on contentious issues such as cost improvement programmes.
  • Ability to prioritise workload and meet tight deadlines.
  • Evidence of strong team‑working skills.
  • Initiative to overcome problems.
  • Displays a smart appearance and integrity.
  • Reliable, punctual and pro‑active approach.
  • Willingness to travel for the role, both between hospital sites and elsewhere, as required.
