Job Overview

Salary: £33,784 per annum, pro rata

Contract type: Fixed Term Appointment for 2 years

Band: E / Higher Executive Officer

Part‑time role (0.5 FTE) – 18 hours per week, available for a combination of on‑site and home working. Applicants should be able to travel to our Kew site for a minimum of 60% of their working time.

  • Qualification or equivalent experience in sustainability, environmental management or related fields.
  • Familiarity with PowerBI and environmental datasets such as energy, emissions, waste, water or supply‑chain data.
  • Proven ability to identify and resolve issues in data collection, ETL workflows and sustainability reporting cycles.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, organisational skills, and ability to prioritise tasks, manage competing deadlines, and work independently or within a team.

Job Description

Role and Responsibilities

Sustainability Data Management

  • Manage the end‑to‑end process of the sustainability database, including data collection from various cross‑departmental resources, validation, and submission. Maintain the database, dashboards, and reporting tools, ensuring consistent, high‑quality data for internal reporting and external disclosure.
  • Implement auditable data quality controls, including versioning, evidence tracking, documentation and audit trails.
  • Produce clear, insightful visualisations and performance summaries using Excel, advanced Power BI and other analytical tools for analysing environmental datasets (energy, CO₂ emissions, waste, water and other indicators) to identify trends, risks and opportunities that inform organisational decision‑making.

Internal Stakeholder Engagement and External Communication

  • Work closely with teams across the organisation to gather information, validate assumptions, and contribute to the continuous improvement of environmental sustainability data structure and management workflows.
  • Support and host discussions within multidisciplinary teams and senior stakeholders, managing differing perspectives and facilitating collaborative decision‑making.
  • Present and explain complex data and methodologies to non‑technical audiences, including senior leaders.
  • Support operation and progress tracking of the organisational sustainability committee and prepare regular reporting material for internal governance bodies and committees.
  • Communicate with external service providers and consultancies, working collaboratively.

Continuous Improvement and Collaboration

  • Identify opportunities to improve data maturity and reporting efficiency. Contribute ideas that enhance data processes, reporting quality and the overall effectiveness of sustainability performance management.
  • Share knowledge, tools and best practices to uplift sustainability data literacy across the organisation.

  • Proactive and tenacious problem‑solving. Demonstrated organisational skills and rapid learning of new skills, subject‑matter knowledge and external data platforms.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

  • Qualification or equivalent experience in sustainability, environmental management or related fields.
  • Familiarity with PowerBI and environmental datasets such as energy, emissions, waste, water or supply‑chain data.
  • Proven ability to work accurately with large and complex data sets, validating, formatting and transforming data into reporting platforms, databases and dashboards.
  • Ability to demonstrate sustainability data and trends for non‑technical audiences and senior stakeholders, maintaining clear audit trails and documentation to support transparent reporting.
  • Proven ability to identify and resolve issues arising during data collection, ETL workflows and sustainability reporting cycles, with a proactive, solution‑focused approach to improving data quality and reporting traceability.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, proven organisational skills, ability to prioritise tasks, manage competing deadlines and work independently or as part of a project team. Motivation to develop new skills and share knowledge with colleagues to uplift data quality across the organisation.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience in sustainability reporting frameworks (e.g., GHG Protocol, TCFD and Greening the Government Commitment).

Other Requirements

  • Applicants are expected to work at least 60% of any working week onsite.
