Job Description:

Development Scientist (R&D) | Permanent | Birkenhead, Merseyside

Are you passionate about developing innovative materials and formulations? We’re recruiting for a Development Scientist to join a growing R&D team, where you’ll play a key role in developing new products, improving existing formulations, and supporting the journey from laboratory development to full-scale manufacturing.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Develop and optimise new formulations for commercial products.
  • Design and manage R&D projects from concept through to production.
  • Conduct laboratory testing, including viscosity, rheology, DSC, mechanical testing, gel time, and other analytical techniques.
  • Scale up formulations from laboratory trials to manufacturing.
  • Collaborate with production, quality, engineering, and commercial teams to deliver successful projects.
  • Investigate quality issues and support continuous product improvement.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory records, risk assessments, and technical documentation.
  • Identify opportunities to improve laboratory processes, testing capabilities, and equipment.

What we’re looking for:

  • Degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Polymer Science, or a related scientific discipline.
  • At least 1-3 years’ industrial R&D experience in polymers, materials, coatings, plastics, adhesives, composites, or a similar field.
  • Experience with formulation development and laboratory testing.
  • Knowledge of techniques such as Rheology, DSC, Mechanical Testing, or Viscosity Testing is highly desirable.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Right to work in the UK is essential.

Desirable:

  • Experience with thermosets, resins, electrical insulation materials, or advanced materials.
  • MSc or PhD in a relevant scientific discipline.
