Role Overview

Assist in financial reporting, analysis, and accounting operations for the assigned business area within the Merseyside & Halton finance team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare accounts, reconciliations, financial reports and analysis to enable effective decision‑making.
  • Collaborate with the Financial Controller, Administrators, Operations Managers and finance teams to ensure compliance with financial policies, proper transaction recording and effective financial controls.
  • Produce management accounts including posting journals, balance sheet reconciliations and identify potential risk areas.
  • Analyse financial results and operational KPIs, identify variances, and report performance against forecasts.
  • Review operational spend, support operational teams to evaluate costs and highlight potential savings.
  • Utilise systems such as Workday, PowerBI and Adaptive Planning as directed.
  • Support forecasting, budgeting and long‑term planning initiatives.
  • Assist in auditing processes to ensure compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Contribute to project‑related work such as new investments and contract extensions.
  • Provide financial information to local management on costs, budgets, forecasts and variances as required.
  • Collect, organise and analyse operational KPIs and financial performance of growth initiatives.
  • Plan and manage workload in line with the accounting timetable and ad‑hoc requests.
  • Process monthly invoicing of material sales to customers.
  • Support administrators on finance matters when requested.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Part or newly qualified accountant (CIMA, ACCA, ACA or equivalent).
  • Advanced proficiency in spreadsheets (Google Sheets and/or Microsoft Excel), including pivot tables and advanced formulas.
  • Highly organised, self‑motivated, capable of accurate work under tight deadlines and unsupervised.
  • Proactive, forward‑thinking mindset with strong problem‑solving ability.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; able to build stakeholder relationships and collaborate effectively with senior leaders and team members across multiple groups.
  • Experience with accountancy systems.
  • Exceptional accuracy, attention to detail and analytical/numerical skills.
  • Strong time‑management and organised approach.
  • Desirable: waste‑management industry knowledge.
  • Desirable: experience with Workday and Adaptive Planning.
  • Desirable: financial modelling skills.
  • Experience in the production of statutory accounts.
