MECHANICAL CRAFTSPERSON / MAINTENANCE FITTER – TUNSTEAD STONE
Are you an experienced Maintenance Fitter from a Readymix, Quarrying, Plant Production or Heavy Engineering environment looking for your next permanent role? If so, we may have the role for you. Tarmac is the UK’s leading sustainable building materials and construction solutions business. We are looking for a Maintenance Fitter to join our team at Tarmac Tunstead Quarry, Buxton, Derbyshire.
Main Responsibilities
The role reports to the Mechanical Maintenance Supervisor and involves
- Supporting the Lead Maintenance Fitter by delivering mechanical maintenance activities across the quarry to satisfy customer demand
- Ensuring compliance with mechanical safety regulations and company standards
- Diagnosing and repairing mechanical faults in heavy machinery, conveyors, and plant systems
- Supporting the installation and commissioning of new equipment
- Supporting the training and mentoring of less experienced Fitters and Apprentices
- Participating in root cause analysis and continuous improvement initiatives
- Liaising with external contractors and suppliers when needed
The Ideal Candidate
Desired qualities and experience include:
- Strong technical knowledge of industrial mechanical systems and experience with PLCs, motors, control panels and instrumentation, preferably gained within the limestone processing industry
- Proven fault‑finding and preventative maintenance skills
- Familiarity with CMMS and MS Office applications
- Ability to motivate colleagues and develop a strong team
- Confidence and capability to deliver against KPI’s
- Knowledge of RCA techniques
- Ability to collaborate with the wider business to share best practice
- Excellent interpersonal skills: supportive, builds trust and respect at all levels
- Systematic problem‑solving skills using available resources
- Drive to eliminate unsafe behaviours and attitudes and improve plant working conditions
- HNC in Mechanical engineering and maintenance (or equivalent)
- NEBOSH or IOSH qualification advantageous
