Are you an experienced SEN Teaching Assistant looking for a truly rewarding role in Thatcham? We are seeking a dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant to join a specialist education package supporting a learner currently receiving inpatient care within a secure hospital setting in Thatcham.

This unique SEN Teaching Assistant position in Thatcham offers the opportunity to make a significant difference to a young person’s educational journey. As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will work as part of a small, specialist team consisting of two SEN Teaching Assistants and a Lead Teacher, supporting the learner to re-engage with education and develop confidence for the future.

This SEN Teaching Assistant role in Thatcham is available for an immediate start and forms part of a bespoke educational provision delivered directly within the hospital environment.

The learner is eager to restart their education and has expressed a strong interest in progressing towards GCSE qualifications, particularly in Maths and English.

The learner presents with:

Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs

Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD)

Pending ADHD assessment

Previous challenges relating to substance misuse

The SEN Teaching Assistant Role in Thatcham

As an SEN Teaching Assistant in Thatcham, you will work closely with the Lead Teacher and another SEN Teaching Assistant to provide personalised educational and pastoral support.

Responsibilities will include:

Supporting the learner during one-to-one educational sessions delivered by the Lead Teacher

Helping to maintain engagement, motivation, and positive participation in learning activities

Building a trusting and supportive professional relationship with the learner

Assisting with educational resources, activities, and lesson preparation

Supporting emotional regulation and wellbeing throughout learning sessions

Working collaboratively with hospital staff and multidisciplinary professionals

Following all safeguarding, security, and hospital procedures

Contributing to a safe, positive, and structured learning environment

This SEN Teaching Assistant position is ideal for someone who enjoys working as part of a collaborative team and can provide both educational and emotional support to learners with complex needs.

Essential Requirements for the SEN Teaching Assistant

We are looking for an SEN Teaching Assistant who:

Has experience supporting children or young people with SEMH needs

Has experience working with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Demonstrates patience, resilience, empathy, and professionalism

Can build positive and trusting relationships

Is confident working within a highly structured environment

Is comfortable working alongside healthcare and multidisciplinary teams

Is willing to undertake specialist training provided by hospital staff

Has excellent communication and teamwork skills

SEN Teaching Assistant experience within specialist education settings

Hospital School, CAMHS, or Secure Setting experience

Trauma-informed practice

Experience supporting young people with complex mental health needs
