About the Business Division

Mott MacDonald’s Water Utilities Division is the centre of excellence for responding to the UK and Ireland’s water and wastewater challenges. We provide advisory services, feasibility studies, design, construction support and commissioning to UK water utility companies and other governmental and private organisations.

Overview of Role

After recent framework successes, we are looking for Principal civil engineers (design engineers). In this role you will be able to make a difference by:

  • Leading the design of major water supply infrastructure to ensure sustainable water security
  • Contributing to innovative grey and blue‑green sewer solutions to reduce wastewater spills
  • Delivering cutting‑edge wastewater treatment plants to improve water quality in rivers and coastlines

We cover all phases of the project life‑cycle from feasibility through detailed design, construction support, commissioning and handover.

Key responsibilities and duties

  • Responsible for the delivery of project(s), coordinating project team(s) to ensure excellent technical delivery within budget and programme
  • Produce and review engineering calculations, specifications, drawings and reports, proactively managing design risk to deliver constructable solutions
  • Represent the company in meetings, building strong client relationships to enhance our reputation and secure further work
  • Deliver projects in close partnership with clients and contractors
  • Contribute to technical excellence and commercial success through forecasting and risk management, and the production of bids and proposals
  • Work to Mott MacDonald’s global standards and review Health, Safety and Welfare alongside environmental impact

Candidate specification

Essential:

  • Chartered Status (CEng) with a recognised Professional Institution
  • Proven ability to deliver complex technical projects, ensuring compliance with relevant quality assurance and technical standards and supporting development of less experienced staff
  • Demonstrable technical experience in design and the management of design teams
  • Strong communication skills with experience in effective collaboration across multidisciplinary teams including environmental specialists, geotechnical, structural, electrical and mechanical engineers
  • Good understanding of designers’ responsibilities under CDM

Desirable:

  • Able to travel to other offices and sites, as required
  • Track record in building teams and capability of junior staff
  • Experience in preparing successful bids and in undertaking client engagement
