We currently have a vacancy for a Band 4 Dental Nurse: 22.5 hours / Working days to be Monday, Wednesday and Thursday Based At HMP Birmingham.
As a Dental Nurse at HMP Birmingham you will support dentists and other dental professionals in delivering dental care to prisoners within a secure environment.
The role combines clinical dental nursing duties with prison security procedures.
Key Responsibilities
- Account for dental instruments and equipment before and after clinics.
- Work closely with prison officers during prisoner movement and appointments.
- Be aware of safeguarding, security risks, and emergency procedures.
- Support the safe running and security of the dental department.
- Attend additional security training and strict adherence to prison protocols.
- The working Environment will require regular interaction with prisoners under escort.
- You will also be required to work across the Community Dental Services when not required at HMP Birmingham, you will be allocated to Attwood Green Health Centre, B15 1LZ.
- Work flexibly within the Community Dental Service, across all localities.
Main duties of the job
- Maintain a high standard of patient care and confidentiality within all dental clinics throughout the service.
- To prepare and monitor patients for and during their dental treatment, providing pre and post operative instructions as required.
- To undertake the general care of the surgery including dental equipment/instruments (medical devices) and arrange any necessary repairs as required.
- To ensure medical emergency drugs and equipment are available and up to date.
- To provide chair side assistance and postoperative instructions during general anaesthetic and exodontia sessions as required.
- To provide oral health education to patients as required by the clinician.
- To assist the Senior Dental Nurse and Specialty Nurses in the smooth running of the Dental service.
- To support and assist clinicians including all student disciplines.
- To support and supervise all apprentice nurses, undergraduate groups.
Person specification
Education
- Professional Registration with General Dental Council
- Other Dental Nursing post qualifications
Experience
- Relevant experience working as part of a dental team, e.g. General Practice, Hospital, other Primary Dental Services / Community Dental Services experiencing chair side duties
- Experience of working with children, elderly, medically compromised patients, and patients with learning disabilities
- previous experience working in a secure setting
In accordance with UK Home Office requirements, Band 2 clinical and non-clinical roles and Band 3 Non-Clinical roles are not eligible for sponsorship.
Please note that the majority of non-clinical roles (Agenda for Change Band 3 – 6) with the exception of those which appear on this list – link , will not meet the minimum requirements set by UK Visas and Immigration to sponsor candidates to work in the UK.
All non-clinical roles (Agenda for Change Bands 7 – 9) that meet the prescribed skill level (RQF 6) and salary threshold will be eligible for sponsorship.

DBS Costs
Please be aware that all new employees starting work with the Trust will be charged for the cost of their DBS check if it is required for the role. The cost will be deducted from your salary in 3 payments over a 3-month period once you start employment. By applying for this role, you are agreeing to these deductions being made. The charges for the DBS include the administration fee. The total costs are £26.40 for a standard check and £54.40 for an enhanced check. The level of check will be determined by the post you are applying for. For bank Workers the full cost of the DBS check (as detailed above) will be deducted from your pay following completion of your online mandatory training. No payment will be made for your online training until it is all complete and verified by the Temporary Staffing Team. Please note: You will not be able to work any bank shifts until you have completed your mandatory training, and your DBS is in place.
