The Opportunity
The School of Engineering is seeking a versatile and enthusiastic Support Technician to join its Technical Services team of approximately 35 staff. The post holder will deliver technical services and support for teaching and research in the civil and mechanical engineering laboratories and the workshop area.
Job Overview
Grade: UE05 – Salary: £29,588 – £33,951 per annum
Contract: Full‑time, 35 hours per week, open‑ended (permanent)
Responsibilities
- Provide routine servicing and maintenance of laboratory and workshop equipment.
- Ensure health & safety compliance, including the use of risk assessments and COSHH documentation.
- Support research projects and practical lab classes for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
- Transfer knowledge and practical skills to students, staff, technicians and apprentices.
- Maintain a suitable stock of hand tools, components and materials for project builds and equipment repair.
- Assist with the use and upkeep of workshop facilities such as pillar drills, 3D printers, CNC routers, laser cutters and welding plants.
Qualifications
- Relevant engineering experience in a professional environment.
- Qualifications such as an apprenticeship, NVQ, O/HNC or equivalent.
- Technical abilities in civil and/or mechanical engineering, structural testing, materials science, additive manufacturing, fabrication, machining, analytical instrumentation, or CAD.
- Good awareness of health & safety regulations and procedures in a laboratory/workshop environment.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a customer‑facing attitude.
