About The Role
Police Staff National Firearms Instructors must have previously been authorised firearms officers and have successfully completed a national firearms instructor’s course approved by the College of Policing. They should have extensive knowledge and experience in delivering the National Police Firearms Curriculum. Applicants must be qualified as a nationally trained, police firearms instructor with sound knowledge of the National Police Firearms Training Curriculum and be able to deliver firearms training to authorised police firearms officers. They must be experienced in handling and firing a wide range of operational police firearms and be physically fit, capable of passing the police 15‑metre role‑related fitness test to Authorised Firearms Officer (AFO) level – 7:6. Additionally, they will prepare, write, and deliver lesson plans to AFOs, including risk assessments and safety briefs. The role requires working mainly at the firing range in Birmingham, with additional assignments at other ranges and training venues across the West Midlands Police region.
Eligibility
- Continuously resident in the UK for the past 5 years
- Previously worked as a police firearms instructor within the last 3 years
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise practical exercises and provide constructive feedback to assist students in the learning process.
- Assess students on courses and report difficulties, progress, etc., maintaining discipline and standards in the class.
- Design and structure lessons to meet course objectives.
- Use computers and associated equipment for the preparation and presentation of training material.
- Actively assist in the planning, timetabling, and development of courses to meet the needs of the force.
Working Conditions
- Hours of Work: 36.5 hours, Monday to Friday 07:30 – 15:30
- Location: Range Complex, Park Lane
- Vetting: Successful applicants must pass Management Vetting and Counter Terrorism Clearance scrutiny, including a full background and financial disclosure.
- Medical: Successful applicants will undergo a medical assessment that may include a drug or hearing test.
- Interviews: Week commencing 3rd August
